OK, all fixed!
In the end after going through the MS troubleshooter, and running MS diagnostics (which failed), I had the option to connect with a MS Agent. He connected to my PC, and I think he did what was suggested earlier, which was to start Window services, stop some others, and the repair...
I've just checked "Uninstall updates", and there is a link to uninstall 24H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5046683).
Does this suggest that I was already on a beta version of 24H2 before I received my PC?
Indeed OS Build 26100.1 is showing as installed on 18/11/2024. I didn't get my PC until the day...
You may be right. The last updates I am showing are:
2024-10 Update for Windows 11 Version 24H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5046683)
Successfully installed on 19/11/2024
2024-11 Cumulative Update for .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.8.1 for Windows 11, version 24H2 for x64 (KB5045934)

So I think this might be related, so I'll wait and see.
"Microsoft confirms Windows 11 KB5044284 / KB5046617 can't install new updates"
"users trying to install new security updates or Patch Tuesdays on Windows 11 24H2 will be unable to do so"...
No idea how I could have gotten on to a Beta release. I didn't get the PC until 19th Nov, and then it would not have been offered to me during Windows update. Very odd.
Winver tells me I have Windows 24H2 (OS Build 26100.1) (Windows 11 Pro).
Windows update is showing me (screenshot attached):

I am not aware of having done anything I shouldn't. I may have had a perfect copy of Windows 11, but Windows update gave me half a dozen updates, and all I selected was to accept them. The first I knew of an issue is when one of the updates failed, and it then suggested installing the Repair...
I'm on Windows 24H2 (OS Build 26100.1). I thought there might be an Asus issue: but I also thought the error messages would be more informative. I don't play games, I don't have any special anti-virus software.
May be I'll try removing the Asus WiFi card.

Windows update was showing this message: "Re-install your current version of windows to repair system files and component "
Tried a recommended update to "Windows 11 Version 24H2 (repair version)" but after 8% download, got this message: "This update can't be downloaded and installed because...
I have a PCS PULSE MID TOWER CASE (PWM). The big button far left turns on the PC.
The light bulb icon shows a blue LED, is this indicating that the PC is on?
There is an unlabelled small round button to the left of the LED button.
It appears to turn off the PC? Or put it into sleep mode...
Just wondering where and how I install an old 3.5-in HDD in the case (PCS PULSE MID TOWER CASE (PWM)).
Is there a user guide for the case somewhere, or YouTube video?
I have a bag of shrapnel pieces, and what I think is a SATA cable.
