120hz external monitor on a laptop

Hello,

I've got myself a laptop built by PCS about 3/4 years ago. Specs as follows:
Win7 Ultimate 64bit
i7 - 3720QM
GTX 680M
16GB DDR3 RAM

Don't think anything else is of relevance to the question. And the question is; is it possible to set up my 120hz monitor to run at 120hz on my laptop? I mean it has a GTX680m so it shouldn't be an issue, however the option does not appear in monitor settings. Cant get it above 60hz. I've tried using 3rd party software to force it to no avail. Google has given nothing of value. I'm guessing its Nvidia Optimus that is messing with this as the connected monitor is shown as running via integrated graphics which cannot handle above 60hz. Even when the dedicated GPU is engaged, lets say with a game, it is capped at 60hz. I've disabled the integrated monitor just to make sure it doesn't mess with the external one, but that did nothing.

I'm using a DVI-D dual link cable. I've tried HDMI, which as far as I'm aware shouldn't run above 60hz anyway. VGA is out of the question.

I am buying a brand new Desktop today so it doesn't matter in a long run but I am passing on this laptop and the monitor to my parents and I'd like to optimise it fully before the new PC arrives.

Any help would be appreciated.

I am afraid it is not possible. The gtx 680m is likely to struggle with high settings at reaching more than 60 fps in demanding games.

Unless that laptop has a dual link DVI, or displayport output you probably won't be able to purely bandwidth wise.
Are you sure the DVI port you are connecting to on the laptop is dual link?

Well judging by the fact that 680m is capable of 3dvision which runs at 120hz, as far as I know, it should handle non-3d 120hz?

Using the picture below, I'm pretty sure it is Dual Link DVI-D.

The gtx 680m should support 3D vision but the chassis doesn't.

Ok, I'll just give up on it. Feel bad now for spending money a while back on the 120hz monitor that I'm giving away now anyway since it cant be fully utilised. haha
