Any tips for a new student's computer?

Due to coming from a "severally deprived area" according to my university, I get given an obscene amount of money given to me in the form of a bursary that, to be honest, I don't really need. The majority is going into a cash ISA of some description, however I'll be throwing some and a bit of my own savings towards a computer, as I probably won't get the opportunity to invest so heavily into one for a long time (hooray student debt!) These are the specs I'm currently looking at, I don't suppose anyone can give any feedback at all?
I'm looking for a solid computer that will be effectively my hub over the next few years, so I need something that can do all the daily tasks (Of course I anticipate this to run Microsoft word absolutely fine strangely enough...) and gaming too. I'm not a massive triple-A gamer and prefer the indie titles, but I'd like something I know can handle newer games at 60+fps, hence the choice of the GTX780 instead of the 760 or 770

Wondering if anyone has any criticisms or suggestions? Also, despite the fact I'm wanting to splash the cash a little, I'm worried that this is perhaps too expensive? (total cost is a shade under £1,500 without a monitor, mice, speakers or other peripherals). Have I perhaps even OVERDONE it and could scale back? All feedback much appreciated!

8GB would be fine for your intended uses and you can always add more later if you need it. Could also go for the 1600MHZ as the speed of ram has no performance increase in games unless you are running an APU.
I would go for a different SSD too as the v300s have some performance issues. Could also upgrade the 2TB HDD to a caviar black for improved speed and reliability.
Unless you have already done so, upgrade to silver warranty. It's only £5 more.
Might want to consider an i5 4690 too as the i7 is a bit overkill for your intended uses.

It looks a bit over the top for what you intend to use it for. I would go with a better case, get 8gb ram, an i5, triple copper heatpipe CPU cooler, 650w PSU and the gigabyte hd3. There are some performance issues with the v300 ssd you may want to consider a different model.

looks like a pretty good spec, you could downgrade the RAM to 8GB 1600MHz though without losing any performance.

If you are not planning to add a 2nd GPU (you would need a better psu anyway) I would go with the gigabyte hd3 motherboard and get a better case like the Coolermaster 690. I wouldn't bother with the sound card, you may want to try on board audio first.
