GTX 1070 more expensive in Octane III...?

Hi guys,

I'm still deliberating between the Octane and Defiance laptops and noticed a significant difference in the price of adding the same GTX 1070 GPU to both the Defiance and the Octane models. I'm not expecting them to be identical, but we're talking about a difference of over £100 on the same component. Is this a mis-price (on either model), or is there justification to this?

Also, under the power adaptor options for the Defiance, I'm able to choose 200W and also 230W. Surely the power requirements for the laptop are set in stone...?

They are. :) If you order it with a GTX 1060 you need a 200W adapter, and if you try to order a GTX 1070 Defiance with a 200W adapter you get this message: "The Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 graphics card requires a 230W AC Adapter. Please amend your specification accordingly."

I imagine the reason you can select options from that drop down menu rather than just being given a power supply is so that you can pick more than one, say if you wanted one to live at home and the other to live in your office / second home etc.

The price difference I counted between increasing a 15.6" Defiance III GPU to a 1070 and doing the same with an Octane III was £49. I can't say why that is, though if I had to make a guess it might be that because the Pascal GPUs use custom PCBs, the GPUs for the Octane are different in their physical layout than the ones for the Defiance in such a way that makes them more expensive. But that's just a wild stab in the dark.

Yup, that's the reason.

The Defiance will have a soldered GPU, which is relatively cheap to do, whereas the Octane takes an MXM module - so it can be swapped out for a faster card later on.

Thanks guys - that all makes sense now. I've also just calculated the difference between the 17" models and interestingly it's £94. Strange.

Retron - Do you have any proof of the Octane III being MXM? I've read conflicting information about it in these forums and it doesn't formally mention it in the specifications...
