gtx 480 overheating issue advice please.

This is a copy n paste job of the email I sent PC specialist. To be honest, they haven't been very helpful. The first time I rang them, they told me to just send in all the details in an email including the card serial number. I did that over ten days ago and had no response. I rang them again today and they would not help me at all besides tell me that they never got my email and that the card is out of warranty.

I recently rang in to your customer support and they advised me to send in all the details via email including the gfx serial number. Card serial number is S/N T8100123939

When using the computer, mainly in games the temp of the card is going up to and above 100c. I know gtx 480 is supposed to be a hot card but when I first got the machine it was only doing 90 sometimes 93. Recently it is going above 100c, usually going to 107c.

Seems to run but my computer is just turning itself off all the time now when under load and the fans etc I can still hear running.

I believe it is the card that is overheating. Sometimes when I turn the computer back on after it has turned itself off, the first screen (a black one) is telling me over clocked failed reset settings in bios. This only happens sometimes though, mostly I get the computer did not shut down properly.
I am actually using 12gb of RAM, I bought another 6gb of the same type I ordered below if this has anything to do with it at all.

The technical team I believe told me it could be just the card itself and I should send in the serial number to see if is still in warranty.

Card seems to idle at 65c using auto fan speed.

obviously the days are getting hotter but I keep the window open so the room is usually cool.

Is there anything I can do, maybe contact the actual manufacturer myself? I have no idea which company made my gfx 480.

Would I be better off buying some after market cooling or whatever it is? I'm not sure i could or would feel comfortable taking apart the card to put this on. Likewise it has been years since I've put together a pc, I also don't feel 100% putting a new one is, the gtx 480 is big and does take alot of room though. Also i'm not sure I want to simply spend £200+ on a new card that probably would be inferior and there is a small chance it might not even be the card ( I doubt that though).

Sorry if it is abit of a rant. I Spent alot of money on this pc and it still runs everything good. it is not like the card has gone crap, just that I don't want to spend alot of money on a new card for similar or less performance, money is tight at the moment.

All drivers are up to date, and I monitor the temps with different programmes. I have cleaned the entire computer inside with an air blaster. Not removed the card from the socket but have still cleaned it.

Card/computer was bought brand new in july/august 2010.

How old is the card? Have you clean the insides of your system lately? The name of the manufacturer should be written in the card.

Thanks I will have a look but I doubt the company will do anything about it. Yeah I cleaned it and updated the op. The card I got in summer 2010 maybe july/august along with the computer. PC specialist said the card ran out of warranty in 2012. Which I thought you get three years for and the 480 were brand new that year.

Have you overclocked anything in your system? Do you know if your card is a factory overclocked model? That is awfully hot my friend. After market coolers tend to be cpu only, and those water cooling graphics cards have to maintain a custom cooling loop as far as i know, which is more hassle than its worth. Many manufacturers of gpus have long term warranties (my xfx 7870 has a lifetime guarantee) so this is indeed worth checking up on, im sure pcs could provide you with this information if you don't know.

As far as what to do goes, if you have no option but to get a replacement id say your card is equivalent to a 650 ti or 7850, and you can pick these up for about £150 - my source for saying that is below

only thing that is overclocked is the cpu and PC specialist did that themselves when it was bought. The card itself is not overclocked but I don't know the model either, just had a quick look inside and I can't see the name of the company on it.

I assume the reason why PCS said the card run out of warranty is due to the warranty you purchase with your system, different warranties offer different length covers for parts but labour cost last 3 years. The gpu is around 3 years old so it might be the reason for the increase in temperatures compare to when you first bought it. I'd suggest calling PCS for a faster response, they should also be able to tell you who the manufacturer is. Good luck, hope you get the issue sorted soon.

I'd suggesting spending a few hours giving the system a major de dust with some compressed air.

PCS can provide you with that I think, give em a call. Alternatively take a picture and us forumites can have a crack at identifying it. There certainly seems an overclocking issue as well if the bios is hitting problems. Try running a program called Prime 95 available free here (http://files.extremeoverclocking.com/file.php?f=205) and hw monitor (http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html) It sounds like the oc has become unstable and might need reset. The card running at 107 is an warranty issue also.

ok finally found out the manufacture. it is Palit.

thank you black dog. Will try those programmes but the OC doesn't seem like an issue, I've had that screen 3 maybe 4 times and my computer is shutting down daily underload.

Not sure if other people have read my post properly but I have rang pc specialist twice and they haven't been helpful or offered any solution other than buy a new card. I also have air dusted the computer for an hour last week. It is dust free from inspecting it just now.

If you are willing to add a little extra noise, then you can use a program such as EVGA Precision X or MSI Afterburner to set a custom fan curve, so if its at 90'c it might run at 70% instead of 60% or whatever values you choose

if its shutting down daily under load, and you are having high temps with the gpu its probable that the 480 is getting so hot the system is restarting/shutting down to protect itself.

It is an old card now, and unfortunately they dont last for years. Also, with it being an old card it has to work harder to play the latest games. So its probably going at 100%.

Are you getting any cpu temp issues?

been using afterburner. when I set the fan to 100% it is as loud as it would be under auto but either way the programme has little effect on my issue, thanks though.

so blackdog I run prime95 while hw running then yeah?

not that I know of, the cpu temp seems to run in the 60s maybe sometimes in the 70s.

when you go over 95 degrees c the gpu fan will be going 100% anyway.

what kinda temps are you getting during prime 95?

The dusting point raised by tom as a very good one and may be the source of some of your problems - may be worth looking into mozza's suggestion also. Your cpu temp is much better. Must be a problem with the card, if its a palit 480, i think that their warranty is solely provided by the vendor, PCS, in which case if the card is defective, you're sadly out of luck.

I've dusted quite recently for over an hour.

I ran that prime95 and the cpu is at 100% and at 90c and I'm having no issues. So yeah must solely be the card.

So if the vendor in this case pc specialist I think it is a bit strange that they provide only two years, I thought in the UK at least all electronic goods have a 3 year warranty as standard.

Other retailers offer less than 2 years without the option to upgrade for a longer period, I think it is to do with cards becoming discontinue and the issues of sourcing a replacement. Not sure what options you had when you purchase yours but right now the standard cover for parts is 1 year but it could be upgraded to 2 or 3 years.

woohh, that's far too hot mate! I dont know much about those old chips, but imo 90c is like boiling... haha.

can you take a picture of the insides of your case mate? you clearly have some temp problems, we can hopefully help you with.

both gpu and cpu are very hot and pumping out hot air into your case. Its likely that said hot is trapped and causing increased temps.

edit - i think by law retailers or sellers must only provide one years warranty for electronic goods.

Well thanks guys, you've been more useful than pc specialist have. And yeah with the card i self it seems more hassle to try and keep it cool than its worth. I will buy a new one, probably a gtx 650ti

speaking of, is there much difference in between these two 650ti's? obviously one of them has more memory but looks tiny in comparison.
