Okay, this may be a very silly question but I'm prepared to ink up the noob stamp and slam it on my forehead if need be.

Basically I stumbled across this lovely website while looking to build my own gaming PC as my laptop has gotten a bit outdated and can't even run the game Magika (sad face)

I'm looking to get my HD 22" TV with HDMI port to be my monitor but unclear on what option I need to tick to make sure there is a HDMI port on the desktop so I can put the lead across, or is this all sorted with the run-of-the-mill monitor lead found on your standard definition monitors.

Thanks for reading and I hope you can help :)

Hello and welcome,

Most GPU's both discrete and on board will come with a HDMI port, failing that DVI to HDMI cables are easy to come by.

And as you volunteered your noob stamp i will break it down:

GPU = Graphics processor or card
Discrete GPU = not standalone, built onto the mainboard or chassis for laptops
DVI = the standard output for video on pc's

And here is a pic of the lead im speaking about showing both connections:

I think i'm right in saying that you just need to drop down the Graphics Card option and make sure you choose one with HDMI

Eee! You guys are so very helpful, very much thank you for the advice and I've selected the "4GB AMD RADEON™ HD6990 - 1 DVI,4 mDP - DX® 11, Eyefinity 5 Capable" in the Graphics Card drop down option.

This is good enough?
Also thanks for breaking it down Gorman - my noob stamp remains ink filled for another day!

4GB AMD RADEON™ HD6990

blimey, i would think that should just about cut it!

P.S. Magicka has got me frustrated, i've got to the bit near the final battle i assume where you're whisked off to several islands but i've never made it past all of 'em.

Teehee I'm hoping this desktop lasts me longer then my laptop has, plus its... *bites lower lip* Alienware.... So I feel a bit cheated on prices, which is why I'm so shocked at this website and just want to make sure it's all perfect before placing the order.

As for magika, I can't even start the game as the screen constantly flashes and I'm unable to click on anything, due to the 2.1ghz processor... Shame on me for not checking the system requirements.

Holy overkill batman!

You have selected around £500 worth of top end dual gpu gaming card there and mentioned Magika in your original post.

You would easily get away with a good mid range card in the £200-300 range and be set for a good few years.

Only consider the 6990 if you are thinking of having several large monitors running at once at resolutions way over the 1920 x 1080 / 1200 a HDTV can handle.

Ohh okay, I'm completely computer illiterate so nice to get a bit of explaining going on. I'll reconfigure the order.

Here is a brutally rough guide to how todays cards perform on a common DX11 benchmark.

Please note where it says "2 GPU's" the score is reflecting the performance of two cards running in SLI / Crossfire.

yeah post the specs, there are loads of people on here who offer great advice - or have a search through the threads to see what others are ordering.

as an aside, if you're thinking of using the tv speakers then generally DVI won't handle audio though i read on AVForums that (hardware & manufacturer dependant) it is possible.

I use a DVI to HDMI cable and it carries audio fine, most current gen GPU's can handle this no problem.

Ok, i would be tempted to tell you to drop the Killer Nic and sound card and put that cash into an SSD. For pure gaming goodness and general performance the cash would be better felt there.

Unless you specifically need the extra inputs / outputs the sound card gives, for gaming i often find no difference in sound quality between a discrete card and the onboard sound.
