Hi there my old black caviar hdd is off to be replaced due to it being faulty in the meantime I've purchased a Samsung 840 evo ssd I just want to start a fresh and install windows straight onto it nothing to carry over from the other hdd luckily.

I've connect the ssd up switched it on and installed the windows disc and I get nothing! Just a blank screen can anyone point me in the right direction. I'm not entirely clued up on this kind of thing but was told it's relatively easy so have given it a go.

Cheers

You need to change the storage configuration first from IDE to AHCI. If you have installed the OS with it set to IDE then you need to change some registry settings or you will get problems. If it was a clean install it would be easier changing to ACHI and reinstalling the OS. If you want the registry setting let me know if you would rather keep the OS installed.

Some SSD's need to be pulgged in first to a working PC, so I have been told. Also some Motherboards do not support AHCI. It will still work but you will not get the full benefit of and SSD. Once you have done this if it still causes problems report and I'll see if I can help further.

EDIT: I should have said, the storage confi you are looking for is in the BIOS.

Don't worry about the overclocking fail. As the new HDD is installed the BIOS did not recognise it. This is standard if you remove the CMOS battery or play around with hardware. Don't worry about that. It will not be shown the next time.

Not sure what I did but it started to install. All up and running now just need to install drivers etc. maybe a bit of newbie premature panicking i think.

On a side note Jesus that thing is quick now! Boot up time is rediculous.

If you had a standard HHD before the chances are the BIOS will still be set to IDE. You need to check this and change it to AHCI or you will shorten the life of the SSD. As the OS is now installed you will also need to change some registry settings as if the OS is installed with IDE with an SSD is configures the registry for IDE. You will also not be getting full performace from the SSD is set to IDE.

Right ok will have to sort this out. Is this a simple procedure or should I be getting some proper help with it?

just done this and somehow maybe was done from the old HDD its already set to this.

thanks for your help and the step by step

Cool, no probs. Your old HDD must have been set to AHCI in the BIOS. This would have made it your old HDD more likely to devolp bugs, glitches etc depending how old it was. The modern ones run with AHCI no problem. Still all sorted now. Enjoy.

It was a black caviar 1 tb was only 12 months old being replaced under warranty. When the new one comes it's going back in but that's another day!!! I have no idea where to connect it or what cables I need!

It is really easy, don't be scared of computers. They can't hurt you and it is very difficult to hurt them. Just remember to earth yourself prior to opening the case and not wear nylon or polyester clothes, you know the ones that crackle when you take them off.

Just get a new Sata cable, and ensure you have a spare Sata power cable (you will have). Stick the HDD in the case. Plug in the power and Sata both sides. The other side goes to the Motherboard, pick one of the empty ones. Start the PC up and if it recognises it straight away, great. It not, search for disc management and create a drive from the empty space on the disc (right click option). Thats you done.
