Is my system overclocked ? CPU-Z screenshots in thread

I got my Vortex IV July 2014 and ordered the 2.9GHz i7-4910QM. Looking in CPU-Z, the CPU identifies itself as exactly that. But the clocks core speed identifies as 3790.95MHz and shows a multiplier of 38 against a bus speed of 99.86MHz. That sure looks overclocked to me. I've looked in the BIOS and didn't see anything in there where I could get a multiplier, so I imagine it's a jumper on the mobo.

Firstly, am I right? And secondly, with such a big amount of overclocking, I'd guess this is the reason for my excessive cooling fan noise and the CPU so easily heating up and getting towards 100 degrees C. Thirdly, if all that's true, how can I get it back to its normal non-overclocked speed? I'd rather a CPU running at the speed it was designed for and not getting too hot than one living fast and heading for an early grave.

I've got screenshots from all the other CPU-Z tabs if any others are more relevant.

A quick search in google indicates that with turbo boost your CPU should go up to 3.9 GHz. If your CPU is getting close to 100'C you may need to repaste it.

I'm keeping that as a last option that I hope I don't need to get to.

First I've got a good cleaning of the fans and vents to do.

Is it possible to disable this turbo boost ? I really don't need it. I don't mind if a task I've started (like a video conversion or rendering) takes longer if it means I can keep the speed down.

I don't think the bios options will allow you to and I also don't think that is the issue causing high temperatures in your system. What are the temps on your gpu ?

Oh joy !!

I found out how to disable the turbo boost in Windows performance settings. I simply changed my power profile to have max cpu set below 100% and that disabled the turbo boost. Now my fans are quiet and my CPU isn't peaking about 90c. I have a few power profile shortcuts on my desktop and can now choose between them with a double-click :) I'm currently running at max CPU of 50% and I can't notice the difference. If I'm doing some heavy stuff I might use the profile that has CPU at 100% max to get the turbo boost, but for every day emailing, surfing and playing a bit of candy crush, I just don't need it. What a difference!
