my keyboard and touchpad have become locked after drivers update by Avast. the guys at Avast say it is nothing to do with them so i am wondering if i am missing something like a self-protective switch-off built into my system. any suggestions welcome.

hello SpyderTracks, unfortunately the keyboard absence still goes on. pc is up to date with windows updates, full system virus scan has revealed no problems. keyboard driver is up to date. the touchpad however does have a yellow triangle with the message "this device cannot start code 10 insufficient system resources exist to complete the API". I have tried system restore three times to different restore points but all refused to complete. On the plus side, a usb keyboard is working fine.

The Avast driver update malware may have overwritten the manufacturer-specific drivers (and is why we tell people to NEVER use any sort of 3rd party driver optimiser or driver installer).

You may get away with reinstalling the latest drivers/control centre from your PCS account...otherwise it might require a reinstall of Windows (not a restore/reset) and then you'd still have to install the control centre package from your PCS account.
