Learned a very valuable lesson

PCSpecialist are one of the easiest and best firms I have ever dealt with.

A few weeks ago, I decided that my Vaio VGN-FW21Z was getting a bit long in the tooth, so looked around and decided on a Clevo. On researching I came across PCSpecialists and watched the and read the Forum. Am I glad that I did.

I decided to go for a 17.3" Vortex III near the top of the range of options (over £2k). It was to last a while.

Eagerly I awaited the anticipated delivery. Eventually it arrived and with heart pounding I opened the box. Then the doubts started creep in. It was big, very big but hey, I kinda half expected that, it was only to be used occasionally on the road and was to be more of a Desktop replacement. So no worries. Then I opened the Power Brick....ugh, it was twice the size of the Vaio and heavy, very heavy.

Getting it up and running, was no problem. The laptop looked and felt really good. Keyboard nice feel, but would have preferred one with the UK Enter key. Graphics great, Runs great, really pleased with build quality. Overall a nice packaged machine..... but that Power Brick....

I had to travel for a few days so packed it up carefully in the double protection of my my Kensington Roller Case. Fits perfectly.... then I think what am I going to do with the brick? It sits there looking at me all forlorn and lonely when not being attached to the laptop. I feel sorry for it and start to pack it as well. But this is a monster in black packaging to me. With all the other junk I had to carry, it was taking up too much room in my case. So, it had to get left behind. Ever tried to use a laptop with no power brick? I can tell you that your options are limited and so is the length of time you can use it.

So.... I contacted PCS Tech Support and the outcome is that I got an RMA and DPD picked it up the next day. Returned.

So now I sit in front of my brand new 15.6 Optimus IV typing this note to say how absolutely delighted I am with it. It's over specc'd, it's not got such a nice keyboard as the Vortex (bit tinny feeling) but it is just perfect, even down to the Power Brick being exactly the right size and weight.

Thank you PCS for the return RMA on the Vortex. I am so glad that I dealt with you, and there is another laptop request coming your way before :santa:.... I do have 2 hands....

Thanks Guys, recommendations all round

Gav,

Would you say if you didn't have to use it on your travels and it just stayed in one place all the time, the Vortex III is best?

I have ordered this model as opposed to a desktop model because I am disabled. I have the computer straddled across my bed. At the moment I have a 17.3" Dell Studio laptop, but when I get the Vortex, the specs will be far superior to the Dell.

So if you didn't have to travel, would you have stuck to the Vortex and is it very easy to set up?

Cheers

I think its crucial to remember that these laptops have powerful cpu's AND powerful gpu's, so they need a big power supply! also remember that the junk you buy from pc world or doesnt even have a gpu, and is often fitted with a low end cpu thats described as "excellent"

I hope you enjoy your laptop mate ;)

Tiger,

Keep the Vortex. I enjoyed my time with it. It exceeded my expectations in terms of the build and feel. It just let me down in size, and as we all know....... size isn't.....

I am sure that it will exceed your needs as desktop replacement. The Power these suckers draw mean the Brick is correspondingly big. I'm sure you have made the right choice.

Regards

Gav

@ Tom: good point Tom. I wanted it to be fast and stylish and I think I had made the right choice for the money I'm spending. I have put my specs below. I know they might be over the top or overkill whatever you want to call it, but I love overkill and this is got to last me for the next four years at least.

@ Gav: as I will invariably be in one place all the time, the power brick thing should not affect me and the extra power will be worth it. Thanks for your input though.

I went for the NVIDIA GTX 675M graphics card as opposed to the AMD 7970. What would I notice in the difference between these two?

Cheers
