Long time no new PC

So It's been 6 years since I last upgraded my PC (FWIW -> i7-4790K / 32Gb / GTX980 / Asus Sabertooth Z87).

My main use is hobbiest FPGA code development for retro emulation, using free toolsets (don't really allow use of multi core, that's a $$$ option), so fast CPU and disk are important. I also do a little gaming over my 3 monitors. My current setup is perfectly OK, but would be nice to move to 4k monitors in the near future.

It's time to upgrade again. So as soon as I started looking I was shocked at the lack of availability of high end GPUs. So it appears that the only way to get a GPU is to order a custom built PC, otherwise it could be a long wait. I have always built my own PCs to spec and have had fun choosing parts. After 6 years everything has changed and I have to learn about PCs all over again ;):ROFLMAO: .

There is lots of choice, but I have decided to go back to AMD (I last used their CPUs in the 90's). A Threadripper is probably over the top, so a Ryzen 9 seems a good choice. One thing I am now baffled about is what memory speed DDR4 do I need? As far as I can tell the Ryzen 7 and 9 need 3200MHz. The question is, is there any benefit to getting 3600MHz. Can the memory interface be overclocked (a little) using faster memory to get a few percent boost? Would the 3600 more likely to work than 3200? I would appreciate any clarity. I've searched YouTube for videos, but surprisingly I haven't found a clear explaination.

The next headache of choice is motherboard. I normally play with overclocking when I first get a system (for fun), then set it back to 100% stock when I start using it normally. There is also the issue of chipsets. As far as I can tell X570 is the latest and I simply assumed this was therefore the best choice. There seems to be a limited choice of motherboards, but I've often used Asus in the past, hence my choice. I have chosen a fast PCIe4 M2 for fast disk I/O. So together with a GTX3080 do the number of PCIe4 lanes match up?

The next issue is choice of case. Again I have watched YouTube videos, but the unusual form factor of the CORSAIR CRYSTAL SERIES 680X RGB GAMING CASE (cut and pasted hence the caps!) works well for where the PC will be situated. My current case is a Phanteks and my CPU and GPU are water cooled (pump and reservoir). At a later date I will want to water cool the CPU and GPU (once the warrently has expired!) and it does appear that this case has enough space for a radiator or two! I did really want the Phanteks Enthoo 917, but I can re-visit this in a year or so.

Any advice or comments (any type :ROFLMAO: ) would be appreciated.

NOTE: I've never bought from PCSpecialist, but 1) their web interface makes choosing pretty easy 2) they seem to have a good selection of high end parts.

NOTE: I am aware that my choice of CPU and GPU will delay delivery by an unknown length of time :(:(:( .

On the one hand, your system is pretty well-balanced and doesn't need much tweaking. On the other, the overclocking gains relatively little on AMD, so I rather doubt it's worth the additional expense. If you cut back on the overclocking, you can upgrade the storage (adding a second SSD for games and other "current" files to keep them separate from your OS drive), the cooler (necessary for the 5900X even if you're not overclocking), and the WiFi card and still come in under £3k.

Above build by @sck451 is on the money. For the extra £6 I’d probably go for the H115i RGB Platinum, the larger radiator is a slightly better cooling solution for the CPU.

As for the memory, the difference between 3200MHz and 3600MHz of the RAM that’s available on the configurator would be minimal for your uses. 3600MHz shines when it comes to audio work 👍

I actually thought I'd selected the H115i. I enjoyed the fact that it came to £2999! Clearly I fat-fingered it somewhere along the way...

Thank you for taking the time to reply! I will re-visit the CPU cooler choice and make the suggested change.

I'm still confused about Ryzen stock memory speeds. Is the fastest stock memory setting 3200MHz DDR4 for both Ryzen 7 and 9?

Now watching more YouTube videos to understand Ryzen memory configurations and help determine which is the most suitable motherboard. I think the one I chose has graphics output, but I assume this only works if you have a CPU with integrated GPU.

Also concerned about CPU and GPU availability and how much any order might be delayed, as I have no idea how long the current drought has been going on for.

The tick by "integrated graphics" indicates support for it. There are no current-generation AMD processors with integrated graphics, so it's irrelevant to you.

I can't claim enormous expertise in memory speed and timing; my guess is that the difference in gaming will be imperceptible, presuming you are at 4K. If you're running at 1080p with framerates in the multiple hundreds, there may be a measurable difference.

As for availability, it will be the 3080 that keeps you waiting much longer than the 5900X. I wouldn't want to make a guess, except that it will be multiple months.

Thanks again. BTW I visited thed NewEgg website in the USA and they were "out of stock" of all RTX30XX cards. I'm not sure what to do. I might even just wait it out for a few months and see what develops. No point in ordering a system with the RTX3080 if it isn't available for months and tying my money up, because if the RTX3070 cards become available (before the RTX3080) it would make sense for me to update the order specifications to request the RTX3070 card.

I'm still confused about choice of memory (speed) and motherboard, but I am enjoying watching various YouTube videos.

If you order with a 3070 then it will still take time (probably 30 days or so), but nothing on the 100+ days of a 3080

Useful comments about availability of 3070 vs 3080. (y)
I found a Youtube channel which was displaying live GPU/CPU availability across a number of US online stores. Virtually everything was "out of stock"
Yep, might have to re-think my PC purchase and just sit things out for a few months :( .
