Hello Jinx

At 4K gaming you should be looking at about 40 - 60 FPS on Ultra settings for most games, you can always reduce some of the settings to try and maintain a FPS of over 60fps if thats important to you, anything about 30FPS is playable but 60FPS and above is most peoples personal preference.

Below is a link to a webby that will give you an idea of the performance you can acheive with the GTX 970 sli.

I have these cards and they are amazing, i would recommend them. I only play at 1080 but plays anything on Ultra with a good framerate normally about 60FPS.

hi guys thanks for the comments, i was trying to stay under £2000 but this build is £2281, I know I would have been better off with an m2 SSD as the motherboard only supports this.

Was going for a solid 1440p build initially but the price of that asus 4k monitor is awesome and it has had good reviews so for the extra £20 I went for it as the 970 ski set up comes in at around £50 more than a single 980 for 1440p and the performance leaves the 980 in the dust.

thanks, i should have mentioned that the price I quoted accidentally includes a keyboard at £126, a headset at £75 and 3 day fast track shipping £70.

Without these my build is £2179 which is still only a small amount cheaper than the spec you have suggested

what is the reason for the i7 over the i5 surely it won't bottleneck the 970 sli'd?

Keynes has Sli 980's in his build

yes but what i want to know is if the i5 is unlocked and won't bottleneck the gpu's then why go for a locked i7 at 3.6ghz?

also the 980 gtx ski will only give a maximum of 20% performance improvement which is not necessary for me as I am comfortable with 40+ fps on the most demanding games.

1tb of storage ain't really enough not to mention not having an SSD

I also need wireless networking.

basically from what i can see this is 10-20% more fps at £100 extra vs double the storage + a 480gb SSD, double ram + overclocking potential

thanks for the replies keep em coming

I haven't checked many reviews for 4k with sli gtx 970 but I think it was around 40 fps average (not consistent) for metro last light and less than 40 fps for Crysis 3. I think 20% is a lot and considering newer games may be more demanding I would go with the best gpu you can get. You can always add an SSD or expensive peripherals later on. The choose of an i7 was to futureproof your build but as you said the i5 shouldnt bottleneck your gpu, however going with an unlocked i5 you may be looking at the h80i for decent overclocking and then the difference in price doesn't seem as significant (between the i5 and i7)

two 980s get 25fps in crisis 3 with ultra settings and 4msaa
two 970s get 22fps

metro last light is 45fps and 50fps according to techpowerup

without msaa you would gain at least 10 maybe even 15-20 fps in both titles making them comfortably playable in combination with the g-sync monitor on the 970's

its ordered and all so hopefully i won't be regretting not spending the extra £300 on the 980's and the i7.

I'll post some results on this thread after i have played a few games. crisis 3 will be first and also black flag (should achieve upwards of 60fps in that)

thanks for the advise everyone

could anyone tell me wether pc specialist use the palit jetstream 970 or the regular palit 970? I have heard the regular palit is pretty much the worst one of the lot with the jetstream version being a bit better but still not as good as say the msi or asus versions....

You need to contact PCS to check what they have available. It could be the reference model which shoild perform as well as any other brand. I have noticed that sometimes they do give pre-overclocked GPUs like the jetstream but you may want to confirm that with PCS
