New Build Help

Hi everyone,

First custom build and I'll be totally honest, I've no real idea what I'm doing ha. It's a long time since I last knew much about pc components.

I need a desktop for working from home and leisure. I am a teacher, so I will be using the Microsoft Office a lot, including Excel.

Also, I need to create a lot of remote learning resources and have what feels like a million video calls per week. I generally have a lot of applications open and need a decent amount of storage.

I also dabble in music production (recording guitars and vocals, VSTs) with Reaper.

I won't be doing any gaming as I'm a console gamer, so don't (think) I need a GPU.

I don't currently use it but I have used 3D parametric modelling in the past (CAD) and that is the only future use I can think of that would need a GPU. Not sure if I would ever need to teach this again but my thoughts are that I could buy a GPU later on, if necessary.

My limit is around £850 without peripherals (I need to buy a monitor and would want to go for a 27" QHD monitor).

This is what I have so far.

Normally you would want AMD but it's a tricky price point to get something meaningful for music production as frequency and RAM speed is key.

The only caveat with this build is that there isn't much of an upgrade path. The CPU is a good fast CPU though so I think that should cover your uses for a long time. The GPU can be added/upgraded should your needs and usage change.

Thanks for the help, Scott.

I accept what you're saying about the price point. It seemed that way when I was looking into things myself.

The budget is a little arbitrary, I suppose. Fuelled mainly by £1000 having some psychological significance and 'seeming a lot'.

Is it the sort of price point where an extra £100 would do much?

Oh, don't get me wrong. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that build. It's very high end and absolutely spot on for your uses.

With AMD, to remain competitive, it needs to be a slightly higher base. Also, as there is no iGPU it needs a GPU in the build too.

This is a similarly performing AMD build. It will handle all aspects of audio to the same level. Any rendering or multi-threaded tasks it will beat the Intel hands down. It's not aimed at your uses though, it's more a general all round system that's a GPU short of being a gaming monster.

The big up-shot of the AMD is the fact that the next generation (and the generation after) CPU will slot straight into this build. This means that in a couple of years, if you wanted/needed more grunt.... you just swap the chip out, rather than replace the core of the system.

In all honesty either build will do exactly what you wish. If you cannot see the uses changing over the next 3-5 years then I would save the money and go with the Intel.

I am going to go with the Intel build and save the money.

Very unlikely that my work needs are going to change and I'm not a big enough gamer to switch from console to PC.

It definitely feels like I'm going to get more for my money with the build you suggested, over my original.

Thank you for the help with this, Scott. I have genuinely never seen such a helpful forum on any subject.

I even read through the thread with you all desperately trying to save the guy money with the unbalanced gaming build. That was a rollercoaster ha.
