Optimus VII and Win7 64b drivers? How about (Ed)Ubuntu 64b?

Hi!

Looking into buying this one: https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/notebooks/optimusVII-15/

Anyone has it and installed Ubuntu 64b on it, please? Want it for my kid...

Not sure if Win7 64b drivers exist for it, in case he can't handle Ubuntu?

Anyone here who actually has it or can say reasonably authoritatively if it is possible to install Win7 Ult 64b on it and have it all working, please?

I would slightly modify the default config, btw: WLAN to include BT 4.0, 8GB of RAM - but mostly as is...

Thanx in advance! :)

P.S. Is there a full access to HDD/SSD bays to change them if needed etc.?

Hi,

Your best bet is to look in the Linux section of the forum to see people's experiences with installing Linux on PCS laptops. Generally it works fine although Nvidia Optimus technology seems to be a recurring issue so make a note of that.

Installing Windows 7 is also troublesome, Microsoft have gone out of their way to disable USB drivers while installing Windows 7 on the latest Intel CPUs. One user had to install Windows 8.1, install an Intel program that could install the drivers (which was only 8.1 compatible), and then install Windows 7. It seems to be a bit of a nightmare getting it running. Again search the forums for a number of people in a similar situation who's experiences may be able to help you.

And yes, there should be no issue getting to the hard drive bays, PCS laptops are built with upgrading in mind! You can also replace the DVD drive with a hard drive caddy too if you ever run out of space!

Had a great desktop deal on Amazon, for less money, double the strength/power/capability, delivered tomorrow, no OS, Athlon octa-core processor 4.2 GHz, 16GB of fast RAM, water cooled CPU, 120GB SSD, 2TB HDD, nVidia 2GB graphics card and whatnot...

Let's hope I can install both OSs for my boy to start learning all sorts a bit faster/better/with more fun to boot... ;)

Fair enough, I learnt a lot when I was forced to use Ubuntu on an old laptop. The hard drive broke and I'd lost the Windows key, so had to use Ubuntu on a spare hard drive I'd found. If my games all ran on Ubuntu and all my software I'd have probably stuck with it. Especially now, as I'm really not a fan of where Microsoft is taking Windows.

The games on Linux are slowly getting there too, just not enough of my library and not enough of the latest games are put on Linux. Hopefully Valve continues with its push with SteamOS for more games on Linux.
