...my mother was talking on Facebook how her iPad has water damage - and she took a screenshot in order to show her friends what it looked like.

*face palms*

Anyone else have any good stories?

My Mum still doesn't understand how so many photographs and "colours" can fit inside a computer.

I keep getting asked to help my mum install stuff on her laptop (etc.). Each time its questions like, I get a message saying (I'm paraphrasing here) 'Do you want to install program x... Yes or No'.....

.......

I mean really!....

Yeah, too many.

My mother did not understand for a long time that she could play a facebook game on her computer, hop onto another computer and pick up where she left off. She still has no real concept of what the internet is, or why she cant use her tablet outwith out wifi range.

In the past she has got all sorts of crap on her computer, but always says she didn't do it. (only she uses that machine) She has no ability to differentiate the 'red box in the corner' of MS applications/message from advertising popups that trick you into downloading stuff.

I am forever being told "the net is down" which I think means she is referring to the internet. Rather than the router playing up/someone hogging all the bandwidth.

I have really, REALLY tried to explain all this but I have to admit defeat.

My mum doesn't understand the difference between wifi and mobile data on her phone. I've been trying to explain it for 2 years now and she asks at least once a month...

Also, I always tell my dad to upgrade the internet to fibre and i'll pay the difference (because our internet is crap) and he always refuses just because he can. Then every couple of weeks he complains the internet is going slowly, but decides to do nothing about it :/

Hahaha sounds just like my dad.

Maybe I shouldn't admit this but when I was younger I remember limiting the router to like 1 or 2MB/s just to make sure we could transfer from a rubbish supplier to a better one. My parents couldn't really see the fuss because they hardly used the internet. Since then we have always had the best available because they use it and hate it being slow. But yeah, gotta think outside the box :smartass:

If I limited the internet then my dad wouldn't care. He would just say "the internet is going slow", as usual, and then just ignore it and continue stick with the same supplier.

It's stupid, I can get up the 3 Megabytes a second on my phone, but only 1/2 a megabyte a second on my pc...

I just paid for my own Fibre line to be installed and paid myself, my dad would never pay for it, nor my mum, yet they both moan about how slow it is.
My mum generally has a pretty good grasp tbh, but my dad is a nightmare, but he is blind and uses Jaws software to assist him in using a PC, but not everything runs smoothly and he always needs help. Explaining some things to him, they clearly go right over his head.

500kbp/s is shockingly slow. Which provider is that with, are you in an area where you should expect higher speeds?

It might just be a case of calling the supplier and asking to be upgraded, some will keep you on a slower speed as they upgrade the network and all it takes is a phone call to get upgraded.

Yep Virgin recently told us we are being upgraded to 100MB/s free of charge for something like that. We have to wait until September some time but still nice considering we are already on 60MB/s which is more than enough, I can get games downloaded in a couple of hours. And like someone said you can always pay for fibre optic to your room, I know a few who have done this, one of them because they run a load of servers from their room

And I always though my parents were bad, but I guess not. They know how to do what they want but not much more. They both use Windows Phones as well and seem to be doing fine with them after I showed them a few extra features that can make using it much quicker.

We're with O2. We have BT infinity and Virgin fibre down our road and my dad refuses to change to either. It's so crap, I could understand if we didn't have fibre in the area, but we do and all my friends have it and can download games 10x faster than me easily. I'd be happy with even the cheapest virgin fibre plan, which is 30 megabits a second, which is still 7x faster than our internet now...

Does your dad like watching sports or anything, sign up to BT and you get free BT sport. Might be a tempter. Can you check on o2's website if they can offer faster, if they can it is just a case of phoning up and getting them to upgrade the line speed.

I know o2 aren't the best but they should offer much better than that, if your contract plan is not 500KB/s (4Mb/s it would be) then I would phone up and complain you aren't getting the speeds you expect.

My dad has no interest in sports unfortunately, so that won't work.

And o2 are the worst, apart from talk talk who give you a download cap, which i'm pretty sure is now extinct but obviously not...

I think our actual speed is supposed to be 8Mb/s, but I usually get 4Mb/s, so half of what we're supposed to get. I would phone up, but for a start they'd say they have to speak to the bill payer and secondly they would just say that those speeds aren't guaranteed, they're a maximum. It's because we use ADSL and we don't have cable into the house, so they would have to install cable, which my dad doesn't want them to do.

He knows that the speeds are crap, he used to work for BT and now works for Ericsson who do mobile telecoms, but just refuses to do anything about it.

I offered to pay for an upgrade multiple times and he would benefit from it, but he just says no...

I've been trying to persuade him for about 2 years now and I've pretty much give up.

Too many to recount (both of them are just as bad, but at least mum knows and accepts it!)

However I did have a cracking conversation the other day with our HR manager who is the same age. If you have never tried to explain "hashtags" to an more mature person before, try it, it's a riot :)

My mother-in-law came to visit from Ukraine for the first time. She arrived in the evening (it was dark out) and she looked out to the garden and said "is that a satellite dish?" (or words to that effect) ..... she was looking at our rotary washing line!
