Hi guys,

Am in need of your help. My PC runs fine! Love it.

My brothers however does not.

I posted a short while ago about his GPU failing, or at least I thought it was.
I got it replaced today but no luck! Still no display.

So it's obviously not GPU. I've cleaned and reseated the RAM and checked all connections etc.
Also thought it might be a HDD failure so took that out and hooked it up to mine and it works no problem!

Only other things it could be are PSU or Mobo surely? :S I don't like the idea of replacing either of those!

The mobo is a Gigabyte GA-73PVM-S2H
PSU is an EZ Cool Super Silent 500W
Kingston KVR 1Gb x2
Nvidia 8800GTX (and a second 8800GTX OC tried)

I also noticed when powering on there are NO beeps and no LEDs lighting up that I could see. I also can't seem to find a CMOS battery on the mobo anywhere!

Any help would be great :) thanks

The CMOS cell is at the bottom, front - just above the front-panel connectors (it's probably obscured by the hard-drive cables)

Do any fans spin when you switch on - do you hear hard-drives spin?

Have you checked the fuse in the mains plug or tried another mains lead?

Hi Pengi, I thought you'd come to the rescue lol

Yeah I've just thought to google that mobo and found the diagram and where the CMOS battery is! Will give replacing that a go next.

Everything spins, all fans. I'm fairly sure the HDD spins too, couldn't really tell 100% over the CPU, GPU and front fan! Also couldn't tell 100% with the PSU fan :S lol

Yes I've tried different leads, tried it with the brand new leads from my PC and also my monitor. Originally thought it was GPU failure because I was getting "no signal" message on the monitor.

Reset CMOS (change the battery if you have a spare).

Check the power connections - there are two of them, a 24 pin one at the front and a small, 4 pin one at the top - just behind the rear-panel ports.

Remove the graphics card - that motherboard has on-board graphics so connect your display to the DVI/HDMI ports on the back panel.

Will get back to you once I've given that a go. I did previously check all connections.
Just need to get hold of a new CMOS battery. Won't reset it until I've got a new battery.

Well, tried all the above today, replaced the battery, reset CMOs, still nothing. Everything is still spinning up fine. Could it be RAM? I've got no way to test it, I don't really want to be testing it in my new rig, don't mind checking HDDs but don't want to start sticking potentionally dodgy components into the mobo!

If you remove all the ram and try to post it do you get any error beeps? If so whats the pattern.

If you do, its most likely something to do with the ram. If not then you are looking at mobo / cpu / psu etc

Try booting with no RAM - if you get a series of beeps we'll at least know that the board is POSTing correctly and you can then try re-inserting the RAM one stick at a time (in different slots if needs be). If the board is very dusty and (especially) if anyone smokes around the PC, it might be worth cleaning the contacts on the RAM - just use a normal, white rubber and gently wipe across the gold-coloured contacts to remove any grease etc then give thema gentle wipe with kitchen roll (not loo-roll or tissues) to remove any dust and bits from the rubber (this is a safe way of removing grease without chemicals or liquids).

Did you remove the graphics card?

Ram out, no change. No post, no beeps.

Could it be PSU when fans etc are still spinning?

I really don't want to be replacing the mobo or cpu... I've never done either before and I find the idea of both rather daunting, especially the whole mobo! :S

Thats not good. Could be either. Remove everything barring the cpu + cooler and try to post. Listen for beeps.

Also please check there is a post speaker attached.

Have already tried booting it when everything removed. Still the same.

Don't know about the speaker... oh dear that could be embarassing, will have to check later as its all done back up now and I'm ill and can't be arsed to open it up again lol There might not be a speaker :S

Everything I've tried seems to have given the same result. Fans spin but no signal from video outputs, no matter whether its GPU or mobo, VGA, DVI or HDMI

(I'm just jotting these down to make them easy to find if we can get some beeps out of that board - they're the "official" codes for that board)

1 short: System boots successfully
2 short: CMOS setting error
1 long, 1 short: Memory or motherboard error
1 long, 2 short: Monitor or graphics card error
1 long, 3 short: Keyboard error
1 long, 9 short: BIOS ROM error
Continuous long beeps: Graphics card not inserted properly
Continuous short beeps: Power error

Thanks, handy to know :) Not a single beep yet though lol Might leave it until tomorrow to have another look though
