Just to let people know I have very little installed as i've only just got it and i've been researching and it could be a driver issue. BUMP for any information regarding this issue.

Sorry, a few questions.

How do I get my buttons at the top of my keyboard to function, ie the brightness control or volume controller as it's more convieient.

I have an IPS screen are they typically ronound for being a tad dim as my brightness is at full yet it looks very dim compared to my monitor which is the same 1920x1080.

Is there a program which idenfities what drivers I need to install rather then trekking through a driver list, as I have very clueless in terms of what to install?

Thanks alot

If you goto device manager (in the run box, devmgmt.msc), see if there are any devices with exclamation marks or listed as unknown devices.

UPDATE - Seems to be on and off in terms of when I shut it down. Just shut it down now to see if anything has changed, and it successfully did with no hang or blue screen. Not sure what the issue is to make it hang earlier because I haven't done anything.

Another little thing, I'm comparing this laptop to a few year old PC which has 4GB of ram and a slightly faster clock speed (3.20GHZ comapred to my 2.6) and it doesnt seem to be faster in terms of browsing etc which has me a little worried as my Laptop has a SSD/HDD aswell. Any suggestions to why? Not sure if it's an issue with a driver or anything but I would of assumed it would outpace it. Scrolling feels really sluggish aswell.

I'm wondering if drivers are installed correctly:

I am wondering that also, I have looked into the device manager and there is no exclamation marks or unknown devices. How do you know if the drivers are intalled correctly or is completely down to assumption?

If there are no fields with exclamation marks and none listed as unknown device, then it's all installed correctly. To access the top row settings buttons you need to press the fn (function) key along with whichever key. Have you got anti virus installed?

Ok, so Kaspersky is as good as it gets really so no worries there. Might be worth uninstalling irst (Intel rapid storage technology) as it's only useful for raid setups amd can cause driver conflicts and blue screens. Just wondering where you got winrar from, ie legit source? Might be worth downloading malwarebytes from www.malwarebytes.org.malwarebytes.org and doing a full scan.

And lastly, can you post your full specs? See if we can work out why the ssd might not be as fast as you hoped.

Thanks for the replies appreciate it. Can't remember now I think it was from a reliable source may of been googled if not downloaded from the driver page within my account on PCSPECIALIST. And what does Malwarebytes do what which Kaspersky can't?

Sure thing - Here is my full spec. It's weird though because it is and it isnt faster than my PC (bearing in mind it's like 2 years old and the specc is nowhere near as good as my one I have just received only a slighly faster clock speed) But general browsing and loading of pages seem quicker on my PC. I also did a comparison in terms of my screen and my computer screen and it looks like my Ultrabook is slighly dimmed even at full brightness and you can really see this when you compare the two (not sure if IPS's are renound for being dim) But the startup and login in blazing fast.

Just wondering what processor you have on your desktop? Higher clock speed doesn't necessarily mean faster performance, it's more down to cores these days, so a 2.3GHz I7 (quad core) will blaze past a 3.2GHz i5 (dual core). Desktop processors are beefier than mobile processors also in general as they can draw much more power and so are designed to.

Malwarebytes is purely designed to scan for malware, whereas virus programs like Kaspersky are more for virus protection. Even if you have a full paid suite that includes malware protection, malwarebytes is certainly one of the most comprehensive malware scanners and will often find stuff others miss.

Your setup is pretty top notch, though, ssd and hdd wise, you couldn't really have picked anything better. My guess is that the processor being dual core would be the biggest hold back on the system. If you wanted to look further into it, you can download the following programs to test the read and write speeds of your SSD and HDD to verify there isn't an issue:

http://www.attotech.com/disk-benchmark/

http://alex-is.de/PHP/fusion/downloads.php?download_id=9

Regarding the screen brightness, IPS screens are pretty much top notch and certainly shouldn't be less bright than OLED or LCD. They're renowned for excellent colour reproduction and quality and graphical designers tend to opt for them because of this. There are various settings in Windows and in Hotkey to adjust, and there'll be different sets of settings that apply when it's plugged in and when on battery. If you double click on the Hotkey icon in the running programs (blue and black circular thingy) that should show different profiles such as performance, power saving etc. Make sure it's set to performance and then have a look through the options and set it up how you'd like. Then for the windows settings, right click on the battery meter and go to power options and do the same. If you still think it's dimmer than it should be, then perhaps give PCS a call and get their perspective on it.

Lastly, another thing worth checking is temperatures when idling and when under load ie loading programs, playing movies. There's a couple of good programs below, may be worth running those and verifying the systems not overheating, although I don't think this is what's causing the BSOD, it's worth checking anyway with a new system:

Apologies if a lot of this sounds obvious, just prefer to give too much information than too little

Tbh, I think I am just being extremely picky in terms of loading times and stuff - I just grabbed up my spec of my PC and it indeed has an Intel Core i5 2500, Quad Core (1155, 3.30GHz, 6MB Cache) which probably explains the faster loading times. The main concern is the blue screen which I had two or 3 times with a shutdown hang within 24hours of me receiving my laptop as you wouldn't expect that to happen. So far, no hang or blue screen so it seems completely random to when it occurs which is weird although I have downloaded Malwarebyes and currently running a scan along side a full scan with Kaspersky see if it picks up anything. Did some research in uninstalling the Intel Rapid Techlology and it seems like it's reasonably helpful in terms of boot times and stuff (What do you think of this, uninstall or keep it?)

And i'll take a picture comparing the two but it may be me having extremely high expectations as my PC screen is very crisp and clear (http://www.amazon.co.uk/ASUS-VE278Q...&sr=8-1&keywords=27+Inch+Asus+VE278Q+LED+Wide) But if you could have a look at the comparision to see what you think of the two that'll be helpful! Last question, whats the Hotkey icon?

Thanks again

Click on the up arrow in the bottom right hand corner, hover over each of the icons and one should say hotkey. Double click on it.

The only sure way to identify the cause of a BSOD is to upload the memory.dmp found in c:\windows. I'll take a look and see what caused the latest bsod. The file only contains information on crashes (BSODS).

IRST can definitely improve hdd/sdd speeds, but can also cause a lot of issues. It was more useful back in the day before ms included their own version in windows. It's mainly necessary for RAID. Maybe leave it on for now and see what the memory.dmp file turns up.
