Ultranote II with PClinuxOS - worth the wait!

At the end of April, I ordered a custom build Ultranote II for a friend with the intention of installing PClinuxOS, as in my experience it's particularly easy for ex-Windows users to get used to.

The specs included an i5 processor, 1TB Sata, full HD screen and the 867 Mbps wireless option. Obviously no operating system, but an excellent bit of kit for under £500.

Firstly, the machine looks good: my friend is very impressed.

I installed the software from an SD card in a usb adaptor (extracted from a DVD .iso): all I needed to do was change the boot priority in the bios. Within half an hour I'd partitioned and formatted the hard drive and installed the default PClinuxOS system. Allthe hardware was recognised and worked on the first reboot, though I then had to change the screen resolution to 1960X1080 and reboot again: a one minute job.

I then took my time personalising the system based on my previous experience and preferences. It doesn't change things that much, but the little tweaks do make computer use more satisfying. See the (reduced size) screenshots below.

Also, the internal sound quality though not wonderful, is pretty good for a laptop!

Thanks go to the various PCspecialist staff who answered hardware questions and who pointed me to this forum.

Sincerely,

Best Linux distro = PCLinuxOS, I have it on my laptop, on my wife's and daughters and on ten test machines :)
