Think I may be posting this in the wrong section so sorry if I am.

I was under the impression all usb 2.0 devices worked with 3.0?
on my new machine I have 2 usb 3.0 "ss" ports on the front which only work with 3.0 devices??

Guessing I was under the wrong impression or is something not working as it should?

did try googling this but just got a lot of 2.0 v 3.0 stuff.

It is backwards compatible so it should work. Desktop or laptop? you could try reinstalling drivers.

that's what I was thinking! desktop. not sure I got any driver discs didn't really look. im guessing its nothing todo with the cabling its self otherwise the 3.0 wouldn't work??

EDIT: so installed the intel usb drivers and still no luck?

What USB2 devices are you trying to use on the USB3 ports? It might help if we knew what you were using.

As keynes has said, USB3 is backwards compatible with USB2 so I suspect that your problem is either related to the specific device(s) or it's a Windows and/or driver problem.

Try a different device, a memory stick mouse anything that is usb2. If multiple devices wont work then you have an issue but at the point it might just be a conflict between a specific device and your usb3 ports.

Not a huge deal anyway is it? You will have loads of usb2 ports to use and using a usb2 device in a usb3 port is not going to do much good anyway.

I have tried a range of 2.0 devices and none of them work. Memory sticks, portable harddrivers mouse keyboard apple cables etc and none work. And is kinda a issue since all my front ports are 3.0. Dont fancy having to use rear ports everytime i want to use a usb! And more to the point even if it wasnt a issue still isnt working the way it should.

Do you have a USB3 device you can test in these ports to be sure they work at all?

Yeah I understand it could be a problem if you only have usb3 ports on the front right enough.

After a quick look on the web I found these possible fixes.

Load up msconfig and check you are not in diagnostic or selective startup. If you are then switch it to normal and see if that works.

If you are already in normal mode, try uninstalling drivers for the usb3 controller in the device manager. Shutdown the computer and let windows install it again when you restart, unless that's how you already did it before. You could also tell it to check for any updates before you uninstall it to see if it find anything. I know you said you reinstalled the intel drivers already but its worth a shot doing it this way too.

One of those 2 things fixed all the complaints I could find.

Ports work fine with 3.0.

Maybe ive forgot to tell some vital information... These ports werent working at all, turns out pcs hadnt plugged the cable into the motherboard, so i did this myself so i thought it would be the drivers? Re-stalled the drivers twice. Device manager days theres no updates.

Ah ok, so have you done the steps I explained above? Have you uninstalled the drivers and restarted the computer? Also the selective start-up thing?

Because you plugged the cable in yourself have you re checked that it is done so correctly? Sometimes what can happen is that the cable may look engaged but something isn't quite lining up correctly, worth unplugging it and trying again if you haven't already done so. Did it look like the cable was forgotten to be plugged in, i.e it was hanging somewhere irrelevant, or did it look like it came loose in transit and possibly broke, ie it was hanging fairly close to where you would expect?

I havnt had the chance to try them steps yet currently out the house

The cable was cable tied up, guessing they didnt realise i had usb 3 on my motherboard. Surely if it wasnt plugged in correct tho usb 3 devices wudnt work?

If only it were that simple, really could be as simple as a couple of pins not making contact. If it was tied up I would rule out damage but if the first 2 steps didn't work then try reconnecting the cable see how that works out.

checked my cable into the motherboard, as soon as I touched it I knew it wasn't in right, opps! reconnected that and all sorted. thanks for your helped! I thought since 3.0 worked it mustn't have been the cable and it would be a driver issue.

Yep, reasonably common for a cable to just not be quite connecting properly.

Sometimes you just have to go back to basics and check it really is plugged in properly, in this case it worked and you didn't have to send off your pc for a few days to get a really simple fault fixed. Could have been tricky to diagnose because usb3 was apparently working fine, but if in doubt start from square one.

Glad you got it fixed anyway. Thanks for the rep.

I would have thought the same. Well done for checking the connection again and nice job mantadog.
