Well this sucks a bit.
I ordered a pre-built desktop 2 days ago. I would have preferred to customise the specs a bit more, but the higher end pre-built ones looked close enough to what I needed, and I figured I was unlikely to get something with an RTX 3060 or higher without a wait or insane price, and I needed this for work now. Normally I wouldn't have gone for coloured lights, though I do admit they are pretty
Anyway, parcel arrives yesterday evening. DPD guy points to the handle of the box on the floor in the hallway, mumbles something and runs off. The handle was ripped like someone had tried to lift it with one hand, and the end of the box looked squashed like it had been dropped pretty hard.
I took pics then opened the box, hoping things had been packed well enough to protect the PC itself.
My heart sank when loose pieces of black plastic started falling out as I unwrapped it.
One of the feet is ripped right off and smashed, leaving behind just a ragged part around the screw. So the machine can't stand upright unsupported. I'm obviously disappointed at this point. I gave PCS a call to tell them, and they advised trying to turn it on anyway, and see if it at least runs ok.
I took out the foam insert, and had a look at the insides. No loose parts or obviously smashed bits at least, but one of the cables to the motherboard was pulled almost off and bent at strange diagonal. When I go to plug it properly, I see the pins are a bit bent. I had to release the cables a bit on the other side to get enough slack to push it back on, but eventually it seemed to plug in properly.
I've now turned it on (propped up under the broken off foot), and it at least starts up without any apparent problems.
At this point I don't know if anything else has been damaged inside, but I'm concerned that my shiny expensive new machine has clearly been bashed around, and wondering if there's any other internal damage that might not be apparent yet.
I've sent an email to PCS and am waiting on a reply.
The broken foot sucks, but I wouldn't really want to send it back and have to wait without a machine to use, so I guess unless there's some way to replace it, I'll make do with some improvised prop - not really what I envisioned when spending this much. We'll see about the actual running of the machine after I do some tests I guess.
My last machine back in 2014 was also from PCS, and that one came in a much stronger cardboard box, with more substantial foam surrounds. I still have that box and even used it for moving house it was so solid.
The box this one came in by contrast is rather flimsy, and the low density foam surrounds were clearly not enough to protect it. If DPD are going to fling things around, then they need to use better packing.
I'm waiting now to see what PCS will do to resolve this, but letting you all know about what to expect with DPD. If I was doing this again I'd try and find a way to collect it myself.
