Vortex IV Spec Check Please!

Hi all,

I'm about to pull the trigger on this Vortex IV but would really appreciate a 'once over' from the resident experts!

I'll be using it primarily for gaming and would like to max out the current crop as well as future titles as far as realistically possible. I guess I'm hoping for a good couple of years at ultra/very high setting hence the choice of GPU & CPU.

I'm lucky that budget isn't an issue right now and I was mulling over a 880M sli setup, but decided I wanted to keep a bit of portability, so 15" and single GPU feels right.

I've got a few Qs please!

- Appreciate it's a difficult question as it depends on usegae, ambient temp etc, but generally speaking will this CPU / GPU combo be ok in terms of heat? I expect it to run hot under full load while gaming, but I'm hoping it will be acceptable (under 90C?).
- On that point, do laptop coolers really work and if so can anyone recommend one?
- I want the ODD so am limited to 1 hard drive on the 15" model. I've gone for the Kingston Crucial 960GB SSD but any thoughts on the 1 TB Samsung?
- Anyone with this laptop who can comment on screen quality? I guess it's not an IPS but still any good?
- Finally, I know 8GB Ram is more than enough for gaming, but, as I'm sweet on funds at the moment, anything to be said for going ahead and sticking 16 in there? Any chance of games utilising >8 GB in the next couple of years?

Sorry for all the questions. Last time I was a pc gamer my desktop had a P4 onboard so it gives you an idea how out of touch I am with all this stuff!!

Cheers for any advice,
TT

I would get the i7-4810mq instead and 8gb ram is plenty for gaming. You could also consider a smaller mSATA SSD and a Scorpio black 750gb.

Thanks a lot for the speedy reply! Ok thanks I'll go for the 4810.

I went for the large SSD as I want the integrated optical drive, so I think that limits me to 1 hDD bay in this model.

Cheers again.

I agree with Keynes, you would be better off with an mSATA SSD and the Scorpio Black. There is only one HD bay but you can have an mSATA and a normal HDD. You really only need the OS and main progs on an SSD, the Scorpio is fine for the rest.

Ah right! I didn't realize I had the option of a HDD as well as an mSATA SSD plus the optical drive. That's great news, I'll definitley take your advice and amend my order.

Thanks everyone!
