Windows anti ransomsware.

I don't know about the game rate (though I doubt that it would affect it unless the game was doing regular writes to protected folders/drives) but Defender's ransomware protection is a very useful addition to a layered security environment. I use it to protect my backup drives for example, and important folders in addition to the default ones that are already there.

There are some downsides. One is that you get no warning message when an application that's not specifically allowed to access these files makes an access attempt. All that happens is that the access is silently denied, often that makes the app fall over - usually with some sort of unintelligible error message. It's easy to add applications to the access list of course, but you do tend to panic that your application is broken somehow before you remember ransomware protection. ;)

The other main downlside is that all authorised applications can access any of the protected drives/folders. You can't (with this tool) specify which applications can access which folders/drives.

As mentioned, this is very useful as part of a wider and layered security environment - you still need some sort of anti-malware engine to try and block the malware before it gets in and you still need a reliable backup regime that will allow you to recover your data after a ransomware attack.
