Hi all,
New to PCS but hopefully will try them out. Below is spec on laptop I'm thinking of, so just wondering if any of you more experienced tech people had any views or advice of changes that would be better.

I basically do general office stuff along with quite a bit of photo editing and graphic. Quite a bit of storage is used for keeping original photos and client files.

My plan is OS on SSD with most other apps, Photoshop, dreamweaver, office etc.. Wanted to try a hybrid hard drive for pulling files into programs to see if I notice much difference as not much difference in price. Also seen a post recommending the killer wireless so made a change there from the 300 Intel.

I'm worried about the fan noise from other posts, can anyone reassure me this isn't a major issue

Any gaming involved? If you want the OS on the SSD you need to put the SSD as the primary drive.

Hi Keynes
No gaming requirements. too much work to do! lol

Yes my plan was to put the SSD as the primary drive, but as PCS don't sell the samsung drive and they need a drive probably to test, they are having to use the hard drive in primary first of all. No operating systme until I get it so will have all to setup when it get here.

Do you think the spec is a good setup and configuration?

Thanks for the reply

I would go with a cheaper chassis that doesn't have an integrated gpu, you could use the saving to upgrade other components like the CPU. I wouldn't go with a hybrid drive if the SSD is the primary drive. You could also consider sending the SSD to PCS to avoid installing it yourself.

The only cheaper chassis is the Cosmos. The reason I didn't pick it was it only has 2 slots for RAM (I wanted more for Photo & Graphic editing on High Res) and also preferred the higher resolution screen on the Optimus again for graphics etc., it gives me a better idea what things will look like on HD screens.

As the Hybrid drive was only an extra £7 over the Scorpio I thought I'd give it a try as they seem to get great performance reviews. A higher CPU would be nice but it was just a little too much of a jump on my budget, hope the 4700 is good though!

I have emailed PCS to see would they install the SSD for me during the build so will be interesting to see if they do.

These are my reasons for what and why I choose this spec, but I appreciate the feedback, it's always great to get other views to get the mind thinking outside itself so thanks for your views.

Regards

Hi all

Keynes, thanks for the tip on sending the SSD to PCS, they agreed no problem to installing this for me. Cheers

I'm thinking should I upgrade the CPU to the 4800mq 2.7Ghz, will I see much difference? It's really being used just for work, photoshop, dreamweaver, uploading/downloading, office etc., but I tend to have alot going on at the same time.

Also, is 24GB Ram too much, I was always a great believer that RAM was horsepower behind the PC but maybe no point putting an F1 engine in a Golf!!?? I did read this somewhere about someone installing 24GB where someone commented:

"make sure you disable or shrink the pagefile or 24gb's of memory is gonna eat a big chunk of your SSD"

What do they mean by this?

Thanks for any help.

ARRGGGHHHH! I'm a patient man for most things but this is frustrating!!! My new laptop went to "Awaiting Dispatch" 09:16 this morning but still hasn't been dispatched. Once I got the email I just got excited thinking I'm gonna have all weekend to set this Tank up! :sweatdrop:

I kinda thought if it was at this status before 3pm it would be dispatched same day. :(

That is strange, if you don't get it by tomorrow you could try changing the delivery for Saturday but at an additional charge.

Unfortunately not an option to N.Ireland. Maybe, just maybe they have it dispatched but forgot to update the system! We live in hope!

The dispatch all depends on when DPD take it off their hands. And also depends on how many other units they have to dispatch too. Mine didn't dispatch same day and it did enter Awaiting before 3PM, but this was because they were actually quite busy in this timeframe, could still be the same story.

And did you order fast track or not?

No fast track option for me, I just got excited as it was in Awaiting so early this morning I thought it would definitely be dispatched today. Patience is just getting the better of me, they shouldn't tease me like this!! :)
