SSD Hard Drive

I'm considering the 15" Optimus V & was thinking of putting in a 128GB SSD & 500GB 7200rpm HD.

I want to play a few games, e.g. Company of heroes 2 & wondered to get the best performance should windows & games be installed on the SSD.

Also how much space does Windows 8.1 take up?

Installing games on the SSD won't give noticeable improvements for games, for the OS yes it will make it run faster. The OS should take around 40gb.

So what's the point of an SSD Drive? Just for the operating system?

For the majority of games an SSD is not going to provide significant difference when loading. You could google benefit of an SSD:
