Hello everyone,

I am thinking of buying the Octane IV with the i7 and the GTX 1080 option. I am comparing it to the Alienware 17 of similar specs. The only difference is the CPU (the Octane has a newer CPU with 6 cores) and the screen panel, the Octane has the AUO B173ZAN01.1 and am not sure about the Alienware.

Starting from the panel, does anyone know which panel is better? I am not sure if the AUO is an IPS panel, and of what quality, (it is an IPS I see now) and how it compares to the Alienware's. For the past 4 years I have been using another PCSpecialist laptop with a FHD TN panel which I completely hate as it is dim and there is noone position I can look at it to see the same colours. In contrast my son has the Dell XPS 15" with 4K touch panel, it is out of this world! And now that I think of it a toiuch panel like on the XPS really changes your interaction with the computer.

I am not sure what the situation is with the GTX 1080 - is it clocked and fitted with the same memory as on the Alieware?

Finally, heat and noise. I know laptops clock down when they get hot, and running games will probably get them hot, are there any experiences with the Octane? How does it handle heat? As a personal experience I have two PCSpecialist 17" laptops (Vortex 17.3" bought in 2014) which both make a vacuum cleaner noise both from the CPU and the GPU no matter how many cleans and re-pastes I have done and what paste I have used.

thanks guys

The Octane is not a laptop but a desktop replacement and so has a desktop CPU so is a lot more powerful than any other laptop.

A mobile 1080 is a mobile 1080 (they’re all the same) unless it’s a MAX-Q variety which is downclocked.

There’s further details on that particular panel here: http://www.panelook.com/B173ZAN01.1_AUO_17.3_LCM_overview_30301.html

And a thread on the 4K panel here:

https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?58688-Octane-IV-4k-IPS-screen-color-accuracy

I’m afraid I can’t comment further on the screen as I don’t have one.

Regarding heat and noise, again as this is a desktop replacement it will run hot and loud most of the time as it’s cooling much more powerful components.

8700k does seem to be the rave right now...

I'm happy with z270 man, 7700k is still powerful. could use more gpu though 1060 3gb could be a restriction in somethings and like 4k.
