Laptop won't boot up after new RAM upgrade

Hi everyone,

I saw a few posts on this before but I have had no solid answers or solutions that worked for me. I am the owner of a PC Specialist Laptop.

So, I purchased two new 8GB ram strips with the exact same specs as my old RAM strip so I can upgrade my laptop from 8GB to 16GB RAM.

The issue I am having is that when both strips are installed into the laptop the machine will not boot-up and just stays in black screen. The computer boots with one of the strips installed and I have tested both strips and both are working fine individually, but the computer just will not boot when they are in there together. The computer only works when the strips are inserted in to RAM 1 but if only one strip is inserted into RAM 2 the computer will not boot.

I have tried opening up BIOS to see if I can enable the second slot or enable XMP and I do not have any such option to do this. I have read online that sometimes updating your BIOS can help (and enable these options?) but have also read that it is strongly recommended that you do not update your BIOS as it can cause many issues? Not sure.

The strips are DDR3, SODIMM, 1600MHz 8gb strips (same as my old strip). I checked my laptop and it states it can support 32gb of ram.

When I checked my memory through the performance tab in task manager it stated here that I have a total of 4 slots when actually there are only 2? Not sure if this has any connection at all?

Any help to get this working would be really appreciated!

What laptop / spec have you got - look at copying the spec into here as it will help others re the advice given.

You say there are only two slots for RAM - I had an old Defiance IV (just replaced it this weekend), which when opened up only looked like it had two slots, but did have 4 - the other two were actually under the keyboard, so you had to take the keyboard out to get to them.

can you post the full spec from your order page and also make sure the ram is fully seated

Well, I don't actually have the right kind of screw driver to get the whole of the back case off annoyingly!

The spec is posted above.

I did check and play around with the RAM strip and make sure it clipped in tight when I inserted it so I'm almost certain that isn't the issue.

Can you photograph the label on both RAM sticks and post them here please? My guess is that they're not actually identical.

My friend deducted that I might have an issue with my RAM 2 slot and suggested returning those two 8GB strips and replacing them with a single 16GB strip and inserting that in to RAM 1 slot which I know is definitely working. Would anyone suggest this?

If you try one new module on slot 1 and the old module on slot 2, does it work? I'm not 100% sure, but I think the laptop is not supposed to boot if only the slot 2 is populated, with slot 1 empty. But both modules should work, though.

Another question: How many modules did you have in the past? Because if there were 2 modules already, so there is no way to be an issue with slot 2 and it is most likely an issue with the new memory modules. They might not be working when on full dual-channel for some weird reason?

No it doesn't. It does not matter what kind of combination that I use... when there is a RAM strip present in the second RAM slot the computer just will not boot up.

There has only ever been one module present in my laptop. The fact that the computer will not boot up when there is a second module present suggests to me that the second slot does indeed work as it is detecting the second module but for some reason it just will not boot with the second module occupying that slot.

Do you think that returning the two 8GB modules I have and exchanging them for a single 16GB module and just having the one module in slot 1 would work?

This may take a while, but it would be worth ruling out the RAM first before assuming its slot 2 error.

Have you run a memtest on the memory: obviously it will have to be one at a time in slot 1 at the moment.

Amazon reviews are not very valid, it’s incredibly easy to fake them.

That’s not a known brand at all. I would say it’s not reliable RAM. I’m not saying reliable RAM from a known brand would fox the issue, but I wouldn’t want to troubleshoot on those sticks of RAM.

So, would you suggest returning the ram and replacing it with a better brand would be the best option?
