Can i Hang a PC upside down?

Hello All

I'm just about to order a new PC from 'you' guys, but i have an issue with the case selection.

I have a riser desk, and my PC will be fixed to the underside of the desk. Most power buttons are on the top panel, so not accessible, if fixed to the underside of the desk

Can i hang the PC upside down? so that the power button is on the bottom? and the PSU is at the top etc?

Thanks

Yeah I'd honestly need to know the full specs of the machine before I could comfortable say yes or no

Ah

heres the specs - i'm thinking of:-
The case, is one of the cheapest with the power button on the front - i want to get one with better air flow.
I'm getting a 650W PSU, so that i can upgrade to a RTX3070, next year when price become sensible, and pass on the 1660 to my son.

Thanks for taking a look

I would change a few things around on the build regardless. You would want a higher PSU with the 3070 in mind, the cooler isn't much cop and the Wifi isn't the best choice.

For storage you would probably be better with a second M2 drive rather than the QVO, the PCS option at 1TB is great value. You could save money on the motherboard and opt for the B550 without any concerns.

The case you have already covered, it really isn't fit for purpose.

When you say hanging the case, how would you fix it? Would it be a full length shelf at the bottom, or would you be screwing through the case, or using straps, or etc?

The main concern, as suggested above, is airflow. As long as the air intakes & exhausts are free and clear the system won't care about orientation. The only thing to consider is the weight of the GPU as they are designed with the plate expecting gravity to be down.... rather than "up". If you fitted a GPU brace this would eliminate this risk.

My current PC is 'fixed' using straps, which does mean i can create a gap(some sort of spacer) between the desk and 'top' of the case

I meant to get rid of the Wifi card -

PSU wise - Nvidia says a 650W is recommended for a 3070? i assume a 750w would be enough?

What Air flow cooler is worth it?

A 750w RM Series will suffice, if you want even further upgradability then I'd opt for an 850w RMx.
The Coolermaster 240 lite is a great option and comes in at the lower end of budgeting.

The pro's may know better, but I'm not sure if there would be cause for concern with the case. They seem to opt against recommending the PCS ones in favour of the likes of the 400D, 500D etc

If it has an AIO cooler you would probably need to move things around as the pipes going to the radiator need to be above the actual pump.
that is not entirely true. What is important is not have pump at the highest point. As long as either, one point of the radiator, or some of the pipes are above the pump, the air bubbles should hang there, instead of the pump

For the 5600X and an unusual orientation, I'd 100% go for air cooling. The Cooler Master Hyper 212 would be ample for that chip.

one thing to bare in mind is if you have fans in what would usually be the roof of the build, with the case upside down, they are going to have to work harder as hot air rises, so they are going to be working against physics......................

this has been debunked sooooooo many times, yet people still say this.

Yes, hot hair rises, in static environment.
PC has fans inside, which cause airflow and turbulences. The miniscule effect of air rising is several hundreds time overthrown by even the lowest rotating fans. As soon as you add single fan into the case, argument of hot hair rises is no longer really valid.

Also, if the PC gonna be flipped upside down. It is possible to flip the way the fans are completely. Have the Top, now bottom be intake and the back or front be outtake. Bunch of cases have bottom intake anyway, so this would be an option as long as there would be adequate space for air to flow.

so the new bottom (old top) would be intake, front would be intake, back would be outtake. Results in positive pressure, and the usual airflow where "heat rises"
