It only started doing things like this last week and i thought it was limited to one game but its not. i suppose i just wanna know what my options are, its not too old so maybe thermals or the gfx card is about to go i dunno. tbh i havent even used it that much since i got it (more than 6 months not powered on in second year then used for more web based programs), would that be a reason and maybe its just the thermal paste and pads need changing ? i dunno other than it functions as a tv now which is depressing given my year. i have all available downloads, reinstalled games, verified game data, renamed files, changed to direct x11, deleted old saves and profile settings. reinstalled games on NVMe SSD change Nvidia setting to performance based and reduced all graphic settings ingame, (this was all for Days Gone), same results on all tests, then changed to a game i know that works COD Cold War Zombies and after same amount of time crashes as it does with Days Gone but without the square things below but same in that it restarts the laptop every time.......................

i just want to know my options as buying a completely new system is just not possible right now thanks in advance

James

Hiya

That's a graphical artifacts issue which can point to a couple of things:

1/. Overheating on the GPU

2/. GPU failure.

Have you serviced it at any point since you've owned it? They require repasting and fans cleaning out about once a year to keep temps optimal.

If you install HWMonitor, what are your temps while it's idle?

Hi,

Tbh I really wouldnt have the confidence to take apart and repaste anything like that for a laptop anyway. I do have a friend who is very able so I'll get him to do it for me. Thanks for coming back to me, I'll install monitor and repost the temps tomorrow, not near the laptop today.

I would suggest watching your friend as they do it as it's something you need to be doing regularly on any performance laptop so you'll need to learn. It's very easy and takes about 30 minutes.

Considering the laptop is a late 2017 model I think the statute of limitations has run out already ;)

Which reminds me, doing the same would be safe (warranty-wise) for mine now. Not a PCS model, mind you; an Asus ROG Strix Scar Edition (try saying that one real fast) from 2018 iirc but shouldn't be much different. All I need now is to find a good repasting vid or two and clear the decks for doing it.
Tbf it's not running any hotter than it ever did, as I blast the vents out every 1-2 months and open up the whole thing 2-3 times a year but it's a still a halfway decent 1080p gaming lappy (i7 8750H, GTX 1070) and would be nice to keep it so.

It's definitely worth doing.

So, Hello! and thanks you all. I feel like i need to give this a bit of closure.

So friend bailed for reasons that were worth it and beyond his control. so had to do it myself.

Just did that today, after ages of not being able to get the stuff and other reasons but.............. it is done and my laptop has not exploded after a few hours of gaming so that is great. GPU temp ingame has gone down by like nearly 20 and is solid so really happy with that, Framerate is pretty solid too (Black Ops: Cold War Zombies, 60-70+ frames, GPU Temp solid 69).

thanks again for the advice peeps

Well done for giving it a go. There's a lot of horror stories about repasting, but it is much easier than people imagine, and now you've done it once, you'll be quicker and calmer doing it next time.

This really is worth doing annually as routine maintenance on a laptop, along with removing any dust in the fans and heatsinks. Greatly increases lifespan of the laptop and also keeps performance optimal.

In my (admittedly minimum) experience, things like this can at first be terrifying, but having got to grips and actually doing it successfully gives a huge boost to confidence and is actually very enjoyable and rewarding.

So this laptop can be upgraded i just wonder have you guys got any thoughts on how far i can go, i dont have money to go that far but i would save up for a bit of longevity and i kinda love this thing so i dont actually want to let it go. truth be told i would just play with this until it dies, and i will, but id like to see what my options are and i am lost when i google. It absolutely not needed right now but i wanna plan for the future
