[SOLVED] BSOD When trying to install Windows on new Drive

Hey there!

I just bought a new NVMe drive to replace the one in my laptop, however when I try to install Windows on this drive (I've removed the older drive) I get a BSOD saying: KERNEL_SECURITY_CHECK_FAILURE.

The SSD that I purchased was: Acer Predator GM7 4TB.
I'm not sure how can I get the dump as it's occurring when I'm trying to install Windows.

I've tried to boot to Hiren's Boot, and the drive wasn't initiated, I initiated it as GPT and even tried to create a partition, and seems like I'm able to write files.
CrystalDiskInfo can also see the drive and health is Good 100%.

Here's the specs of my laptop:

Others will have more detailed info, but you won't get the 7400MB/s transfer speeds advertised for that drive because it's PCIe4 and your laptop is only PCIe3. A PCIe4 drive should works in a PCIe3 system - but only at PCIe3 speeds.

How are you installing Windows?
From where did you get the installation media?
At what point do you get the BDOD?

your laptop is only PCIe3
Where is that information? I tried to check it, but couldn't find it.

How are you installing Windows?
Ventoy
From where did you get the installation media?
Microsoft website: https://www.microsoft.com/software-download/windows11
"Download Windows 11 Disk Image (ISO) for x64 devices"

At what point do you get the BDOD?
Computer boots, I see ventoy, I select Windows ISO, I see Windows loading screen with PCSpecialist logo, BSOD.

I'll try on a different computer with USB from Media Creation Tool

Got the same problem with Media Creation Tool with this SSD.

Just tried on a different device and I can see the "Select Language" screen with this SSD.
The motherboard on this device says "Storage Slot: One M.2 2280 PCIe® 3.0 x2 slot"

So what process are you going through to install, describe each step

I don't have an option to do anything.
  1. I remove the old drive (the one that has Windows running, and that I used to create the Windows Media Creation Tool)
  2. Connect the new one
  3. Plug USB
  4. Boot of USB
  5. PCSpecialist Logo with Windows Loading spinner
  6. Bluescreen

If it's getting to step 5 it's because it hasn't booted off the USB

There is no BSOD in the windows installer, it's impossible to trigger a BSOD

Uh, that is strange then.
My motherboard has 2 slots for NVMe SSDs, I only have the 4tb one connected.
And I also only have the USB from Media Creation Tool plugged in, no network to somehow try to boot of network or anything.

I'll try to record a video showing what I'm doing, to see if it's something obvious that I'm missing

So how are you booting the USB? We asked for the precise process but you haven't answered with it

Here:
As you can see there's nothing else storage related that is connected other than the new drive and the USB.
I also tried without the USB connected and I got the error:
"Default Boot Device Missing or Boot Failed"

I also tried both slots for the NVMe, and got the same result.

And then I went to confirm with my working SSD and under Advanced for some reason it also says PCIe 1.0

Okay so in my other laptop, I plugged this 4TB drive and the Windows USB and I was able to install Windows, and it works fine even after rebooting.

To confirm I then plugged the drive back into my computer and still BSOD.
Also checked with different RAM sticks and still no boot.

I used a NVMe USB adapter to see if it would also Bluescreen, but no.
I can see the drive without a problem.
Checked and there is no dump, or minidumps that I could extract to analyse.

And no, installing Windows on another PC will not work. Windows configures itself at install time for thr hardware it's being installed on. So your Windows is now configured for the wrong hardware. That typically leads to BSODs further down the line.

I'm going yo be blunt here and say that you sound a bit cavalier in the way you're approaching this. You MUST follow the standard installation procedure using media created by the Windows Mefia Creation Tool.

Stop trying to be clever and/or short-circuiting the install process and fo things properly.

That was from a different laptop, I guess knowing what SSD my computer has (from the specs) can tell what PCIe it supports
PCIe is backwards compatible, what drive you have has no indication of what the motherboard supports.

It's all based on the chipset.

You can run a PCIe4 fine on whatever PCIe the motherboard supports, it would just be restricted to the speeds that the motherboard supports.

Any PCIe gen will work in any motherboard.

All that's happening is it's not booting the USB, that's all.

There is no PCS logo on the windows installer, that's the BIOS boot which means it's bypassed the USB and gone through to trying to boot an OS. If it was booting the USB, it would show the windows logo, not the PCS
logo

Which version of windows were you previously running?

The Kingston is the USB drive I plugged in with Windows Installer.
At 0:44 it shows the Predator drive:

I don't think so because of this:
I also tried without the USB connected and I got the error:
"Default Boot Device Missing or Boot Failed"
When I unplug the USB I get that message saying there's nothing to boot from.
