Upgrading after 7~ years.

Greetings ^^ currently I have a 7-8 year old build (i7-8700k gtx 1080ti) - thinking of upgrading to something new. My pc is getting on a bit now. Newer titles can get pretty sluggish. Couldn't even play the Oblivion remake above 40fps lordy..

I'll be using the PC primarily for everyday use, plus gaming, possibly on/off streaming if I ever wanted to try that again. I haven't given myself a budget but I'd say between £2,500-£3,500 or so. I currently have and use two 1440p 120mhz monitors, with how old my card is now it's probably not built for that but whatever it works. I'm not interested in raytracing 4k gaming. I don't use VR. Not really interested in flashy RGB. I don't really know anything about PC specs these days not going to lie.

I kinda just picked AMD DDR5 preset and left most things at default. Changed a few things.
Not dead set on anything here other than wanting to get my hands on a 50 series, figured 5080 would be a good choice.
The case? the cooler? fans? motherboard? haven't got a clue.

I don’t think that’s far off. I’ve tweaked it a little to get you a higher tier motherboard, better split of storage for the same price.

Case
FRACTAL MESHIFY 3 XL AMBIENCE PRO TG
Processor (CPU)
AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D Eight Core CPU (Up to 5.2GHz/104MB w/3D V-CACHE/AM5)
Motherboard
GIGABYTE X870E AORUS ELITE WIFI7 (AM5, DDR5, M.2 PCIe 5.0, Wi-Fi 7) - higher X870E tier (Asus is just the X870, which is really just a renamed older B650E tier)
Memory (RAM)
32GB Corsair VENGEANCE DDR5 6000MHz CL30 (2 x 16GB)
Graphics Card
16GB GIGABYTE GEFORCE RTX 5080 GAMING OC - HDMI, 3 x DP
1st M.2 SSD Drive
1TB CRUCIAL T500 GEN 4 M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD (up to 7300MB/sR, 6800MB/sW) - better reputation (on here at least) than the Samsung, keeping it to 1TB as it should only house Windows, apps and games launchers
1st M.2 SSD Drive
2TB SOLIDIGM P44 PRO GEN 4 M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD (up to 7000MB/sR, 6500MB/sW) - secondary drive for game installs / documents (a HDD could be included if you wanted to slow storage)
Power Supply
CORSAIR 1000W RMx SERIES™ ATX 3.1, MODULAR, CYBENETICS GOLD - a bit more headroom for the system and future upgrades (the HX 1200w wouldn’t necessarily be overkill with a 10 year lifespan in mind, but it adds a chunk more to the cost)
Power Cable
1 x 1.5 Metre UK Power Cable (Kettle Lead, 1.0mm Core)
Processor Cooling
CORSAIR ICUE LINK TITAN 360 RX LCD RGB HIGH PERFORMANCE CPU COOLER
Thermal Paste
STANDARD THERMAL PASTE FOR SUFFICIENT COOLING
Extra Case Fans

BTW, you can probably get that below £3000 with a cheaper (but still good) case and a Palit/Zotac GPU…but I also understand wanting a more premium brand of GPU.

The other option to save, whilst getting a good brand GPU, would be to order without a GPU and source your own…as the Nvidia FE version was available earlier in the week at £949 (which is about £300 less than the Gigabyte version on here).

Gigabyte version also available for £1149 elsewhere (about £100 cheaper than on here)…

Of course the GPU warranty is then with the retailer/manufacturer, not PCS, so that decision is yours.

Thank you ^^ better storage and psu for a fiver extra.
Can you explain the mobo change, what do you mean by it's a higher tier? what's the difference.

I don't know the differences between the GPU's brands, I just read online the Gigabyte one is a good choice for no real reason, but I did also read the cheaper palit GPU benches pretty good out of them all. And with the case, you're right, I could find a cheaper one but I just picked the least eye offending one big enough to house everything - on PCS

The motherboard tiers go from B840 > B850 > X870 > X870E.

Each increase in tier may give higher capacity components, offer more PCIe lanes for more/faster storage, more USB headers, more USB ports on the rear, etc.

Here's a 'summary' I created showing the tiers and how they relate between the 2 generations of AM5 systems...most of the newer ones are just the older motherboard with USB4/wifi7...but in some cases they've changed the number to make it seem a bigger change...when it isn't (in the case of the X870, it's just a newer version of the older B650E, so not a X-70 tier at all).

But in the case of the Asus Strix X870-F (non-E) vs the Gigabyte X870E - it's pointless to spend the same money on the lower tier Strix X870 (non-E).

If you don't need the features of the premium X870E motherboard, then you can save even more by going down to the X870 or B650 tier (Gigabyte is still the cheaper option though - for example the lower tier Asus Tuf B650 is the same price as the Gigabyte Eagle X870).
