8 Year Gaming PC Just died... :(

Hi All
I've been using my current PC for awhile now, and yesterday after work when I switched it on, it had died, I think it's the MoBo, but I'm no testing expert. The PC is around 7-8 years old now, I7-4770, 1080 GTX card. But It's time for a new one. As I'm currently using an old PC the gaming side of things have to be put on hold.

I use it mainly for gaming and would love to make sure it will last 5+ years, The monitor I use is a 2k monitor with 144 refresh. When I game, I always love to go ultra graphics. As It's been a while I'm out of touch which component is the best etc.

I have around £3000 to spend, and put the below spec together. I would really like it ASAP (as I have a 2 week break at xmas) but my only concern is the 3080 card.

>>No idea when they're expected to arrive in stock, but I wouldn't sacrifice a 7 - 10 year investment on being delivered by Christmas.

I just read this above line on another thread... even though I'm sad about my current PC, I'm happy to wait for stocks etc. It would just be a bonus if I get the PC I want before xmas. :) I'll just revert to some older games on our spare 12 year old Pc. lol

Any thoughts, feedback, suggestions on this?

Many thanks.

Hi. Could you please include the "Unique Configurable URL" from the bottom of the post to forum page (it's listed in green). Makes it easier to just edit things rather than run up a new spec. Thanks
Ooh, thanks didn't know about that :) Done!

Case
CORSAIR CRYSTAL SERIES 680X RGB GAMING CASE - A much better case. However, if you don't like it feel free to change it back
Processor (CPU)

AMD Ryzen 9 5900X 12 Core CPU (3.7GHz-4.8GHz/70MB CACHE/AM4)
Motherboard
ASUS® ROG STRIX X570-F GAMING (USB 3.2 Gen 2, PCIe 4.0) - ARGB Ready! - Ample for your usage. One thing is that this board is not compatible with the USB add-on card you selected so, if you need that USB card for a specific reason, then change back to the Crosshair
Memory (RAM)

32GB Corsair VENGEANCE DDR4 3200MHz (2 x 16GB) - 16GB is more than ample for gaming currently, 32GB is for flight sims and such where it needs RAM. 64GB for gaming is just £100 wasted unless you have other uses you haven't specified?
Graphics Card

10GB NVIDIA GEFORCE RTX 3080 - HDMI, DP (Delivery before Xmas not guaranteed) - Given your monitor, you should be fine with a 3070...supplies of these are better but whether Christmas delivery is guaranteed is a different matter. There's no message on the configurator like with the 3080 so maybe.

Processor Cooling

Corsair H115i RGB PLATINUM Hydro Series High Performance CPU Cooler - Main difference between this and the XT is the fans have RGB on them...looks better to me.
Thermal Paste

STANDARD THERMAL PASTE FOR SUFFICIENT COOLING - The high-end Corsairs already have high-end paste applied at the factory so it would involve PCS removing said paste and then putting on the Arctic paste...and it's possible the Corsair paste is better anyway

Office Software

FREE 30 Day Trial of Microsoft 365® (Operating System Required)
Anti-Virus
NO ANTI-VIRUS SOFTWARE - Removed Bullguard as it is so problematic as to effectively make it worthless...Windows Defender is as good, if not better and is free as it comes as part of Windows
Many thanks for the feed back and the response time, much appreciated.
For me, I'm going to stick with my current selected case and cooler - I'm not one for all the RGB stuff, since it's under my desk hidden away I don't see it anyway. But that case looks really wide and not sure it will fit in the gap under my desk.

Paste - Thanks on that, wasn't aware :)
Bullguard - How did i miss that - Yea its always been worthless, agree. my old pc is windows 8.1 and defender was crap on that, so I used Comodo, but hear defender has got better now.

Memory - Yep 32gb now, agree 100 quick wasted there - think I'm just treating myself too much.
MoBo - Thanks for that - had no idea and for the USB Addon, since there were no option for "none" I just went with the best one since price difference wasn't much... Didn't say it wasn't compatible though... Thanks!

Office Software -- Is there anyway to NOT HAVE THIS??? I prefer to use the freebies like open office for the limited about of letters I do these days.

GPU - Think I'll stick with the 3080 on this. I might look at upping my monitor next year or so. If it comes after xmas so be it... I'm hoping it will last 7+ years so long term investment I can wait a few weeks.

Again Many thanks for the tips.

Case and cooler: Yep, it's fine...totally your choice...The XT is pretty similar in performance to the Platinum as it is an update on an older model.

Anti-virus: Defender is excellent these days...I have used it exclusively for the past 8 years, maybe more and, in all that time, I have only had one virus and that was my own fault (I over-rode Defender on something and then regretted it!) and I use the internet a lot. I would suggest downloading the free version of Malwarebytes and just run a scan once a week for extra protection.

Motherboard: The default option shoudl be fine for you then. The card was compatible with the motherboard you chose..just wasn't compatible with the one I chose.

Office: No? I can't remember for sure but, when I got mine, either I just uninstalled the Office stuff or it needed installing to use them so I didn't install. I use OpenOffice too.

Thanks again. Defender seems to have got better over the years, so I'll try that. I've now ordered the new PC so waiting on that, probably going to be next year, but my wife says it will give me time to play some OLD games I have in my steam library (apparently I buy games and don't play them for long... hehe), the card in this pc is an old gtx 740.

As I mentioned my old PC is about 7-8 years old, and in Oct I turned 50, so I was planning on "treating myself" with a new one, but the PC still manages quite well so wasn't in a rush, was going to wait until next year.... until Friday when it died...

I play on a single monitor 27" - ASUS - ROG PG279Q at 2560x1440 - Unfortunately the monitor is probably only about a year old now, but not really looking at upgrading it anytime soon.

No no, that's a beautiful monitor, not time to replace it just yet, has a lot left in it.

Happy 50th btw, congratulations. Can't think of a better present than a quality gaming rig!
A new Ferrari? ;)

Yes, I spent about £700 on the monitor, my older one (which is now my 2nd monitor) is only a 1080, but when I bought my 1080 GPU I wanted a better monitor then. hehe.

Thanks, and yes new gaming righ is top notch... when I finally get it. As for a Ferrari, Meh, I'll get bored of it after a week, but games... been playing them since early 80's :)

Another option is to order without graphics card, this assuming your 1080 works Still.

you get the PC before Christmas and can either order 3080 elsewhere or as soon as PC delivered upgrade your order for the 3080.

A lot depends if want a pc to use over that 2 week holiday period.
