A build for editing and gaming

Updated: I've updated this since originally posting, and thanks to a small windfall will be looking to order within the next few days.

Hello everyone,

I've had a look at the before posting thread so will try to be concise on info below. I appreciate your collective expertise in advance of any advice!

Monitor (already owned, may upgrade in future if there's any recommendation to do so but would be separately purchased, mostly useful as I like to work all in one screen on my editing work): SAMSUNG LS34J550 Quad HD 34" LED Monitor - 3440x1440 with 50Hz refresh rate (according to the dxdiag)
Uses: Primarily Image and Video editing. Heavy Photoshop and Illustrator use, but other Adobe programs and Blender too. My current 16GB system occasionally complains about lack of available RAM when doing more intense projects. I want to keep it suited to VR gaming too as I have the kit albeit struggle to find the time. A coworker of mine has suggested the biggest wins over my current system will be the M.2 SSD and more RAM.
Budget: £1,600.

I'm not particularly precious about intel/AMD or anything like that, though I understand AMD is considered better in almost all ways at present. I've built the below AMD based spec based on Martin's feedback below. As long as it all runs smoothly through creative projects and heavy editing, and stays cool enough I'm a happy camper.

Case
COOLERMASTER SILENCIO S600 QUIET MID TOWER CASE (I quite like this one for the SD card in the top as I use a lot, and it's not intensely RGB all over, and that it says it's quiet)
Processor (CPU)
AMD Ryzen 7 3700X Eight Core CPU (3.6GHz-4.4GHz/36MB CACHE/AM4)
Motherboard
Gigabyte B450 AORUS ELITE: DDR4, USB 3.1 - ARGB Ready
Memory (RAM)
32GB Corsair VENGEANCE DDR4 2400MHz (2 x 16GB)
Graphics Card
6GB NVIDIA GEFORCE RTX 2060 - HDMI, DP - VR Ready!
1st Storage Drive
4TB SEAGATE BARRACUDA SATA-III 3.5" HDD, 6GB/s, 5400RPM, 256MB CACHE
1st M.2 SSD Drive
2TB CORSAIR MP400 NVMe PCIe M.2 SSD (up to 3480 MB/R, 3000 MB/W)
DVD/BLU-RAY Drive
16x BLU-RAY WRITER DRIVE, 16x DVD ±R/±RW & SOFTWARE
Power Supply
CORSAIR 550W TXm SERIES™ SEMI-MODULAR 80 PLUS® GOLD, ULTRA QUIET
Power Cable
1 x 1 Metre UK Power Cable (Kettle Lead)
Processor Cooling
PCS FrostFlow 150 Series High Performance CPU Cooler
Thermal Paste
ARCTIC MX-4 EXTREME THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY COMPOUND
Extra Case Fans
2x 120mm Black Case Fan (configured to extract from rear/roof)
Sound Card
ONBOARD 6 CHANNEL (5.1) HIGH DEF AUDIO (AS STANDARD)
Network Card
10/100/1000 GIGABIT LAN PORT
USB/Thunderbolt Options
MIN. 2 x USB 3.0 & 2 x USB 2.0 PORTS @ BACK PANEL + MIN. 2 FRONT PORTS

For other notes:
I have my own Windows copy and recovery media.
I'm not carrying over any old disk drives from the current system.
I am open to carrying over the RAM in my current system to bolster this new spec, but not something I am too concerned about. Existing RAM is this.

As you aren't planning on ordering till about June I would suggest resurrecting this thread maybe sometime towards the end of May as hopefully what is a very volatile market at the moment will have settled by then, the way things are at the moment builds have been known to increase in price by upto £100 overnight.

When you do resurrect this thread, use the AMD configurator, link below:

Understood and will do! Thank you Martin :)

Resurrecting per Martin's advice, and I have updated the original post with a new AMD-based build :) I appreciate any insights in advance. A friend of mine says the PSU doesn't look sufficient because the graphics card needs 500W minimum, but the builder told me that I'd probably only need a 450W in the notes. Even so, I defer to the expertise in these forums!

450W is the minimum load for the build. When the build is actually running and pushing the parts it will use more power, they say you should have 20% more than you need but I always recommend 850W because PCS offer a great price on a really good 850W PSU that's hard not to recommend but 750W should be more than enough for most builds. I wouldn't want less than that for my own build so I don't recommend less than 750W

Gotcha! For the sake of a £30 difference to ensure there's enough power to keep me going on big projects (or even games) I'm inclined to take that advice and put an 850W in there then.

I wouldnt update the original post, it gets very confuising after such a long gap.
Easier just to post the current spec to the thread like normal.

If its the build I can see in the first post atm, its got a few issues...
Could you post the whole spec of the current plan including the config link at the bottom?

Ah for sure, my bad.

Here's the spec and the link - like I say above I'm not really beholden to anything in terms of parts, so please do chop and change away as you'd see fit, save for maybe the case as it has a handy SD card slot which I would use a lot and it seems like the case overall would stop too much of the RGB madness, and I've been told a lot of good things about m.2 drives but I guess that's par for the course these days! Budget is around £1,600 but I can push that a little bit if it makes a world of difference for a certain part combination.

Yeah that build is a bit of a mess mate, I'd be looking for something like this at that budget.

Went for a newer generation CPU, faster RAM as I wouldn't use less than 3200Mhz with the Ryzen processors they need fast RAM

Changed the storage to something that makes more sense and went for better more reliable cooling

Changed the motherboard to something much much better and dropped the thermal paste, the CPU cooler I selected comes with it's own high quality paste

I think we need to consider that video editing is a primary use, and VR has been mentioned. The 1660 Super is not going to be performing fantastically well at video editing and will be absolutely vomit inducing for VR.

Yeah restriction on budget have me prioritising in certain directions. Ideally I'd like 8GB of VRAM for the video editing but I'm trying hard to keep it on budget and thinking more on the editing side as opposed to VR.

I'd like to see suggestions maybe I'm overthinking this

It's tricky, £1,600 doesn't stretch as far as the good old days so there's always going to be compromises...

Unfortunately the 3060Ti is unavailable on the configurator at the moment, if we could stick it in the following build it'd bring us to £1,663. It'd be solid for the editing and cope with some light VR use too.

Appreciate the insights guys, in terms of budget I can go to £2,000 but thats the hard limit (a dip into savings that I would have as a debt to myself later), if that makes a significant difference in terms of being able to do the work I need it to do?

A number of projects I work on can get space hungry as well, which is where I think maybe its worth having a larger HDD for storage of older projects and photography/resource files? And then the m.2 drive (or drives depending on thoughts) for all of the OS and day to day stuff / game installs.

As far as VR (a nice to have but not the be all and end all) in terms of my current build I've got a 3GB 1060 which has fared well enough with the games I'd played so far. Though I should expect beefy requirements from future VR games I imagine :ROFLMAO:

I agree with @AgentCooper that going up to the 5800x would help with editing, if you can stretch your budget that far.
