Advice needed please re SATA to USB connector

My boss gave me a Lenovo E73 Thinkcentre (less hard disk) which was no longer being used. I installed a new hard disk which is running Windows 10 Professional. The small case provides no space for a installation of a second DVD drive I have from an old PC - (Samsung SH-S223C - DVD±RW (±R DL) / DVD-RAM drive - Serial ATA - internal), but I have seen various SATA to USB cables which would appear to enable internal DVD drives to work via a USB 3.0 slot.

However, I am confused by the terminology used - can anyone please explain which type of SATA to USB cable I should buy?

Many thanks

These forums belong to PC Specialist who build and sell custom PCs and laptops. As such, users can't give advise on self build projects or competitors' specs.

I must say though... if the thing already has a DVD drive.. and there is no space to add a second DVD drive.. you're not going to be able to add another internal DVD drive. Of course you could use a USB to Sata adapter to use it as a very, very bulky external drive, though unless you have a very specific use case that doesn't really sound very helpful.

I'm not sure if you'd need a powered adapter or not.

If you did need that, and didn't already have one, it would be more elegant and no more expensive to just buy an external DVD drive...

It depends on your use case but it does sound like one of those things that can be done, but isn't necessarily something that should be done...

You could try an open forum like Tom's Hardware.
