Advice on upgrading to an SSD from HDD

I was wondering how difficult it would be. I'm unsure I can find my windows disk to even install the OS again.

If I were to buy a Samsung 840 EVO 250GB for example. Would this SSD come with the ability to clone my current harddrive to the SSD?

Would I need to partition the SSD as well? I plan on just installing the OS and a few applications and games I use frequently on there.

I currently have a 500gb with the OS on it and a 1TB second harddrive which mainly has most of my programmes and storage on it.

you get utilities which clone your HDD onto a new SSD, not sure if Samsung bundles the software n with the drive but most do.

You wont need to partition it, if you can find your original disk that's the best option.

its fairly easy to do ether way, but the windows disk is the best option that way you don't get junk on the SSD. As you say keep it for the OS + apps only.

You don't need the original disk, if you have the serial key just download the relevant ISO file from Digital River and mount it to a bootable USB stick. Job done.

No, is is no difficult at all.
Google "Migrate os to SSD", you will find lots of answer.
backup hdd first then restore to ssd is also ok(backup software: aomei backuper)

Just to be clear, if the OS you're upgrading is Windows Vista or later then you'll be fine, you can simply clone your existing system off the HDD and on to the SSD. In the unlikely event that it's a Windows XP system then you can't. This is because of a partition alignment issue that is critical to the way SSDs work. Windows Vista and later align their partitions correctly for SSDs, Windows XP does not. So if it's an XP system you should read up online about partition alignment on SSDs, create a suitable partition on your SSD, and then reinstall Windows XP.

I have no idea whther Linux aligns it's partitions properly for SSDs but I'd bet that it does.
