Are 4090 laptops overkill/overpriced?

Hey,

I'm looking at getting a 4090 laptop for both gaming and game development on the go.

The one I'm looking at has a
i9 14900HX
4090 16GB
64GB RAM 4800Mhz
2 or 4TB Samsung M2 NVME PCIE

It's 2560x1600 so I guess I'd play most games maxed out for the foreseeable future.

Would I be paying too much for this at the moment? I know the 50xx series laptops are on the horizon, but I think even the 5060/70 versions will be very overpriced early on.

I noticed a new AM5 build desktop wasn't much more with a 5080 or 5090, but I guess portability is my issue as I'm not constantly with my desktop.

Laptops are more expensive and underpowered compared to desktops, so that is always a consideration.

I'm far from an expert, but my understanding is that the 5000-series laptops are due out fairly soon, so it'd typically make more sense to wait and get one of those rather than buying a laptop now that is about to become a generation old. It'd be far from obsolete at this point, but it'd likely be a much worse value proposition than what is coming.

Don't forget that with that level of CPU/GPU you'd need to get the external cooler as well...which makes it less portable than a normal laptop - as it's intended as a 'desktop replacement'.
Are we talking air cooling stand or a liquid cooling system? Can I detach the liquid cooling?

Id also like to know if damage from liquid leaking would void any warranty.

It’s a liquid cooler. You can detach it but it will thermal throttle without the cooler so performance will be reduced.

The recoil isn’t a laptop, it’s a DTR (desktop replacement) which means it isn’t designed to be portable so will have poor battery life etc, it’s designed to be always plugged in on a desk.

Youd Need to ask PCS directly about warranty implications, none of us work for them, this forum is community run.

But I definitely wouldn’t buy any off the current 4000 series laptops as the improvements from the ones about to be released is substantial both in power and efficiency, youll get far more for the money

There should be no leakage inside the laptop as the cooling pipes go to the outside at the back. They are "quick disconnect" couplings as well so you can just pop them off (not while the cooler is running though) and only a couple of drops might escape on to your desk. It will run better with the cooler attached.

As others have already said, wait for new product refresh in March if you can.
