Blue Screen on Restart

Morning all,

I've had my computer for a couple of months and all has been working well until last night.

When doing multiple software updates last night I restarted my PC to implement said updates but was hit with a BSoD.

I powered down the computer completely and then powered back on, implemented the updates and all was working fine. Or so I thought.

When restarting I would say 80% of the time it blue screens. When powering on from off it works absolutely fine.

I haven't had time to troubleshoot due to time constraints. I appreciate I've been a little vague and won't be home all day to remedy the issue but if anyone has any info/help for me to try later that would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Is this a PC specialist pc? Could you post your full specs from the order page?

We'll need to know the BSOD code also please.

It is indeed from PCS. Approx 5 months old.

The main error code I saw was "System Service Exception". And just to reiterate: this *only* happens when restarting, not when powering on from off.

Assuming you have "Fast Startup" enabled, then choosing Shutdown from the start menu doesn't do a complete shutdown, it saves the Windows kernel state to the HD/SSD for fast boot. A Restart from start menu, doesn't save the kernel, so it's created from scratch. Obviously something is failing and causing the BSOD, either a bad driver or system file.

When you are able to get into Windows, check you have all (including optional driver updates) updates installed. Then try running a CHKDSK and SFC to check for corrupt files.

Great, let's hope one of the updates you installed had a minor issue and the SFC resolved. Report back if not.
