Bluetooth Wake Settings

I have a new keyboard which I have connected to my PC’s Bluetooth for the first time. It is working fine other than I’m unable to wake the PC by pressing a keyboard key. Is anyone able to help resolve this? I would like to wake the PC by using my keyboard.

The keyboard power settings in Device Manager are set to allow it to wake the PC. The same power option within the Bluetooth settings is greyed out (as per attached screenshots).

Windows says the best driver for my Bluetooth device is already installed.

I’m unable to find the model number of my network card. Is anyone able to help me work that out? The description on my PC Specialist Invoice is: WIRELESS INTEL® Wi-Fi 6 AX200 2,400Mbps/5GHz, 300Mbps/2.4GHz PCI-E CARD + BT 5.0

If it's set to disable device to save power then you can't set it to wake the PC (as it will be disabled), you can only do one or the other.

Bear in mind you have to have sleep / hibernation enabled to be able to wake the PC with the keyboard.

Could you post your full specs from the order page?

Thanks for the reply.

The setting you refer to was on by default. I have tried unticking it. It does not enable the greyed out box or allow me to wake the machine using the keyboard.

Can you clarify what you mean by “Bear in mind you have to have sleep / hibernation enabled to be able to wake the PC with the keyboard”. Where is this setting?

I was able to wake the PC with my previous Logitech keyboard but that was connecting to a Logitech Unifer USB dongle rather than directly to the PC’s Bluetooth.

Disable hibernate

In general, the Bluetooth device will be disconnected when the system enters sleep or hibernate mode, so cannot wake up the computer.

However, if Modern Standby is supported, the Bluetooth devices are still connected after the system enters sleep mode. But if it enters hibernate mode, the connection will be disabled.

Here is how to enable Modern Standby:

  • In the Start menu, run "Choose a power plan"
  • Click "Change plan settings" for your power plan
  • Click "Change advanced power settings"
  • Expand "Hibernate after", located under "Sleep"
  • Set "On battery" and "Plugged in" as "Never"
  • Click OK
  • Reboot.
If this doesn't work still, the chances are slim, but continue on.

Last-ditch effort

  • Run Command Prompt (cmd) as Administrator
  • Enter the command: powercfg /devicequery wake_programmable
  • If you see the Bluetooth device in the list, run
powercfg /deviceenableawake "Bluetooth Device exact name"

Note: The above command is worded according to the documentation with deviceenableawake. However, the help shown by powercfg /? says rather that the verb is deviceenablewake:
powercfg /deviceenablewake "Bluetooth Device exact name"

  • Run the command:
    powercfg -devicequery wake_armed

If your device is now in the list, this should now work. Reboot.
If nothing works, then the computer hardware probably does not support Wake-on-Bluetooth.

I use a Logitech wireless and mouse with the logi unifying receiver, Master series.
In sleep mode, my computer will wake up with a key press or mouse movement.
I've got an Asus X670 mobo, which will have different capabilities, but I'd expect 'Wake-on-Bluetooth' to be one you'd have.
My old, retired, computer had it, so I'd be surprised if yours didn't. (old 'puter specs are redacted in my sig :) )

Thanks for your thoughts.

I was using a Logitech keyboard connected to a unifying receiver previously. A key press would always wake the PC without fail. Unfortunately, I just can't achieve the same with my new Microsoft Surface keyboard connected directly to the PC's Bluetooth.
