hi

within the last 3 months or so i bought a

Processor (CPU)AMD Ryzen™ 9 Eight Core Processor 5900HX (3.3GHz, 4.6GHz Turbo)
Memory (RAM)32GB Corsair 2933MHz SODIMM DDR4 (2 x 16GB)
Graphics CardNVIDIA® GeForce® RTX 3080 - 16.0GB GDDR6 Video RAM - DirectX® 12.1

i just tried to boot from usb to use a bootable virus checker but it gets to the main boot screen of the recovery program and then hangs and goes nowhere

i have tried various types of recovery programs from trend micro to eset_sysrescue all with the same results

i know the usb drive that i am using works as i used it to install linux on another computer that i have

one thing to note is that i have disconected my battery because i have my computer pluged in all of the time

thanks

What are you using a bootable virus checker for, windows defender is all you need?

I'd suggest a clean install of windows following these instructions:

Download a new copy of Windows using the Media Creation Tool to an 8GB (min) USB.
Boot that USB and choose a Custom Install.
Delete all UEFI partitions on the system drive (EFI System, Recovery, MSR Reserved, Primary).
Select the unallocated space that results and click the Next button. The installer will create the correct partitions and install Windows.
Run Windows Update repeatedly, even across reboots, until no more updates are found.
You may need/want to download and install the latest graphics driver from the Nvidia/AMD website (they change so regularly the latest version isn't always in the Windows libraries).

i created a zip file to send some spreadsheets to my acountant and windows defender detected

Trojan:Script/Sabsik.TE.A!ml in the zip file

and i have no idea where it came from so i was worried and thought it would be better to do a boot time scan,

i did one with windows defender but it didnt take very long to do so i did not think it did a very comprehensive scan

so i thought i would do one with an altenative but i could not get them to boot

i could do a reinstall but that would take a long time to do as i would have to reinstall all my various apps and logins again

i will try and see if windows will boot from usb though

This sounds like a legacy boot issue. Is the USB stick UEFI bootable? If not is the laptop BIOS set to allow legacy boot?
