Boot Time Slow?

Hi all,

Got my PC couple days ago. I think the boot time is too slow. Task manager is saying BIOS time is 43 seconds which already seems high, but POST is taking up the bulk of the time. I've attached a screenshot of one of the bios screens in case that helps and also a video of the start up. I feel like it shouldn't take this long. I have some IT knowledge but not a lot so let me know if there's anything else you think helpful to see or if this is completely normal.. though it's way slower than my old setup

Yeah, that's up to date.

It's not the POST that's taking a while, it's the windows boot, it's hard to tell as you're not videoing the primary screen until the end.

But I take it you've installed windows correctly? What method did you do to install windows and configure it?

It was pre-installed from PCSpecialist I just had to do the log on part. The OS is on the 2tb hard drive though which is the C: drive which isn't what I put as my main drive. Not sure if that makes a difference?

The moment I turn the camera is when the BIOS screen pops up. The whole time before it's just whirring away and then does a single beep.

Ah, that will be the issue, that's simply a test OS, you can't use it, it's not set up, you'd need to clean install your own copy.

Maybe I did install it..I just turned on the pc and had to log into my ms account and it activated my key

Oh, sorry, I totally read it wrong, I saw no recovery media and mistakenly read that as no operating system.

Have you applied all optional updates? Can you upload a screenshot?

Okay good! Phew. Yeah everything is up to date as far as I'm aware, I had to install some windows updates when first got on.

I take it from all the questions it's not something glaringly obvious

What antivirus are you using?

It's really difficult to tell where the delay is happeninig as you weren't recording the main monitor so we couldn't see the output until the very end just before windows loaded.

There is a thing on AM5 where on the first boot, it trains the memory timings to maximise memory performance, that would cause an expected delay that can last a good minute. That's entirely normal.

But we really need to see where the delay is happning to be able to accurately advise.

Ah, I've just found a forum thread on the Asus forums that may be related

"To do this you SHOUD NOT enable "Memory context restore" in "Advanced menu", but go to [AI Tweaker menu – DRAM Timing Control] and the enable “Memory context restore” and “Power Down Enable”

Thanks for all the help so far. I've put in a (hopefully) better video. I'm just using the windows AV.

I've just enabled those two options (they were set to auto) and it's way quicker now (boot time is 17.4 seconds)

As long as that's safe for those things to be on enable (sorry Im not techy enough to know if it's now bad for my PC health) or like you said maybe my setup just means it takes 50 seconds Vs something actually being wrong

From what I understand, this would mean that the EXPO "tuning" of the RAM is failing to find an optimal stable speed.

It's possible it's a bug with the board in that the EXPO timing tool just isn't up to par in some circumstances, but it could also point to a memory issue.

Once you get a moment, it's worth doing a memtest86 full test of the RAM sticks.

You can create a bootable Memtest USB, all the guidance is in the installer directions:

If the memtest returns any failures, it should tell you which stick is faulty, but I'd RMA both sticks with PCS as they should always be installed as matched pairs. You can create an RMA through your main PCS account in the "my returns" section, only need to RMA the RAM, not the whole PC.

Then they would ship you a replacement set next day delivery.

But you may get lucky, if the Memtest passes, then you're safe to carry on as normal with those BIOS settings applied.

Hi, thank you for all the help so far! I've done a Memtest. It got 3 errors in Test 8, only passed 1/4 times. Could that be a cause? I assume 3 errors is enough that I should probably RMA it?
