BSOD Issues with new Optimus V Laptop

Hello,

I recently got a new Optimus V Laptop (around a week ago). Since receiving it I have had around 8 BSOD warnings which I think are related to the graphics card.

The screen just goes black and runs over to the BSOD error. The file in question which seems to cause the crash is nvdklm.sys and it only starts to occur if I am mid game and the battery dies. The computer BSOD's upon loading (Elder Scrolls Online or Minecraft, haven't tried with other games). This happens soon after clicking the play button on launch screen for elder scrolls and at the point where Minecraft begins to load the .exe file.

Once the error occurs once the BSOD error happens everytime I try to launch the games and I can only boot into games after uninstalling and reinstalling the graphics drivers again however the error messages seem to be becoming a little more frequent.

I am running the latest drivers for the graphics card from nvidia's website which I believe are 335.27 WHQL.

Here are the specs of my machine:

Chassis & Display Optimus Series: 13.3" Matte Full HD LED IPS Widescreen (1920x1080)
Processor (CPU) Intel® Core™i7 Quad Core Mobile Processor i7-4700MQ (2.40GHz) 6MB
Memory (RAM) 8GB SAMSUNG 1600MHz SODIMM DDR3 MEMORY (1 x 8GB)
Graphics Card NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 765M - 2.0GB DDR5 Video RAM - DirectX® 11
Memory - Hard Disk 240GB KINGSTON V300 SSD, SATA 6 Gb (450MB/R, 450MB/W)
Battery 13.3" Optimus Series 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery (62.16WH)
Operating System Genuine Windows 7 Professional 64 Bit w/SP1 - inc DVD & Licence

Any help or advice on this would be greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks,
Jaymeh

Can you post a link to the drivers package you're using?

Also, are you using a games platform like steam, if so in big picture mode?

Hi Spyder,

Sure here is the link: http://www.nvidia.co.uk/download/driverResults.aspx/73882/en-uk

I have steam installed on the laptop however I only use it for Starbound but I don't use it in big picture mode.

Thanks,
Jaymeh

Hiya, sorry took a while to respond. That's the latest stable drivers. It may be worth trying the beta drivers here http://www.geforce.co.uk/drivers/results/74722.

Also, what makes you think it's the display drivers, did you look through the BSOD logs? Best to do that and see exactly what's failing.

Hi Spyder,

My apologies for not getting back to this sooner. I decided to try a complete re-install of the machine to see if this resolves the problem. The computer has been ok since doing this until just a few moments ago. I was in the middle of playing GTA IV - Episodes from Liberty City on it when the computer just shut itself off. I didn't panic so much as I thought this may be due to my battery dying. Upon plugging it in and turning it back on again I noticed that it had around 36% battery still left. It seems that now whenever I try to open up Grand Theft Auto again the computer seems to just bluescreen and crash. This is what I could dig up from the Event Viewer with the crash report.

I have a feeling this could be caused by two possible problems but I'm not sure if there is a way of me tracking it down:

1. The laptop is overheating. (I think this because the fans are running for much longer than normal when I first boot up the machine after a crash).
2. The nvidia drivers are causing the computer issue. (I think this due to the fact that my machine will no longer blue screen if I reinstall the drivers again from scratch).

These are of course just theories and it could be something else all together.

I am still using the following nvidia driver: 335.23 with the nvidia gforce experience app.

In the meantime I shall try using the beta driver you sent over last time and see if this makes a difference.

Thanks again,
Jamie

Hi Jaymeh

Windows logs will not give particularly useful info on bsod's unfortunately. You need to install a program called dumpchk.exe which is part of the windows sdk:

http://social.technet.microsoft.com...is-dumpchk-for-windows-7?forum=w7itprogeneral

Then in dumpchk you can load the file c:/windows/memory.dmp which stores the exact cause of failure for the BSOD.

It may also be worth monitoring your temps when gaming to verify the laptop isn't overheating.

Hi Spyder,

Once more I have been having issues with the laptop. I am unsure of the best way to check the temperatures of the machine however it doesn't seem to blue screen while playing any games. I have tried to run dmpchk howver I am unsure as to how it was working. I have used a piece of software called BlueScreenView which shows the following results:

The two power state failures I beleive are to do with the issues with the graphics drivers at the moment.

Thanks,
Jamie
