Budget - My budget is £2600 and I aim to stay in that price bracket with desktop, monitor and delivery/setup included. There is a possibility of another two hundred on top of the monitor.

Uses - Primarily editing, motion design, and graphic design. Most importantly after-effects as this is the main program that I use. Something I can use for freelance design work on a daily basis. Hopefully something that can render at an excellent speed. I'm not partially bothered about using 3D/ Cinema 4D but something that could handle that would be a good addiction.

Monitor - Undecided. It needs to be under 23" as it's a small setup. Suitable for design work so good percentage RGB? The overall budget including delivery is around £2600 give or take £200, so I need a monitor that's able to fit into that price range with the desktop price included.

I'm currently using a laptop which I've had for around five years HP Pavilion 15 PCF4T62EA#ABU and been using Macs at my old job. I now finally have the money for a good desktop, anything would be an upgrade, and plan to commit to freelance work in the future. I'm not exactly a computer wizkid so please be gentle with me, but I'm always willing to learn

Hi mate, I made a bunch of changes but still came under your budget for what I think is a better machine. I kept your case even though I personally would select a different one. I would go with the Corsair 5000X or 5000D

CPU Changed the 5900X as it's great for production and editing.

Changed the GPU to better suit your monitor and needs. The extra VRAM will help with editing and you'll be using a 23" monitor so at 1080p it's the best option. 3070 is really for 1440p and higher end gaming the 3060 will suit you nicely

Changed your storage to something that makes more sense, went for M2's as opposed to SSD which are much much faster. I've also included a HDD for general storage

Upped the PSU Significantly to give the build longevity and give it tonnes of room to add and upgrade down the line.

Removed the Thermal paste as the CPU cooler will come with high quality paste. Also changed the cooler itself to something a bit beefier and more suited the 5900X

Removed the technician assisted install? Don't know why you want or would need that mate to be honest.

Kept your gold warranty if you wanted that but Silver is usually fine, that includes the returns and most parts have manufacturers warranties anyways.

Hi, thank you for such a quick reply.

With full honesty I only chose the NZXT case because it looked the nicest 😅, the 5000D looks really nice and I'm not too fussed about RGB so I'll go for that instead.

For the CPU I wasn't sure whether to go bigger for the 5900x or not, so 12 cores at 5900x will defiantly do the trick.

Thanks for the tip about the GPU, I knew that a 3080 wasn't going to be necessary for what I wanted to do unless I really needed to work with 3D, I just wasn't that sure which one to go for. Just curious, could a 3060 run on a higher than 1080p monitor? Also sorry about all the questions, but do you have a monitor you could recommend?

For the storage, I was told that Samsung is a good company hence all the Samsung SSDs😅 I heard an HDD more reliable than an SSD, do you know if that's true?

Thanks for the tip on the power supply, it's nice to know especially if it'll save me some gripe later down the line.

Also, I didn't know about the CPU cooler coming with paste so thank you for saving me £9. I'd prefer to pay more for the CPU cooler if that's what's necessary for the CPU.

I added the Technician assisted install because I'm I've never fully owned a desktop before so I feel a bit scared about ducking it up (I'm insecure 🤣)

As for the warranty, I might go for silver and save some more money to put towards my monitor.

Thank you so much for all your help.

There are couple of guys round here who know monitors really well so I'll let them suggest you one @SpyderTracks for example. The 3060 can run higher than 1080p yes but I wouldn't be gaming on anything more than 1080p with it. In terms of editing I'm sure it could do up to 4K in video editing, it wouldn't be the best option for that usage but it could do it.

For the storage, I was told that Samsung is a good company hence all the Samsung SSDs😅 I heard an HDD more reliable than an SSD, do you know if that's true? HDD's technically last long but floppy discs last longer than USB. We don't use Floppy discs anymore because they are crap, HDD have been essentially replaced for anything other than general storage with SSD's and SSD's are going to be replaced by M2 SSD's. Just a newer format of SSD and much faster at reading and writing to the disc.

Thanks for the tip on the power supply, it's nice to know especially if it'll save me some gripe later down the line. No problem!

Also, I didn't know about the CPU cooler coming with paste so thank you for saving me £9. I'd prefer to pay more for the CPU cooler if that's what's necessary for the CPU.

As for the warranty, I might go for silver and save some more money to put towards my monitor. I would recommend this, if a part is going to fail it'll likely do it in the first year which is covered in the silver warranty

Thank you so much for all your help.

You also need to change the WiFi card to the AX200. @Steveyg missed that one.

What programmes are you using for editing? Is it video, photos or both that you are editing? What is your budget for a monitor? Ideally, you want something with a wide colour gamut appropriate to your medium. For photos that would be sRGB or Adobe RGB. There are different gamuts for video, but I am not up to speed with these. HDR capability would also be useful for video editing. You really need to calibrate your monitor regularly to make sure that your edits appear to others as you see it. A suitable calibrator will likely cost you over £100.

Matching the GPU to screen resolution is really only required for gaming, where you are trying to output a high resolution image at high frequency. For editing the same rules don’t apply.

Thanks, STEVEYG you've been a big help.

I've just seen the reply from BIGFOOT which clears up my questions about the GPU and the monitor. I can't see myself doing much 4K work so it's perhaps something to think about in the future with a bigger budget.

Ah, I see your point about HDDs, made me remember the floppy disk 😅 , I understand now I just didn't know which seemed better but I'll stick with your recommended spec. I know, especially with after effects, that a fast SSD is great for the cache.

I thought when setting up the desktop that it would require me to install windows, do this and that etc, but if it's a simple as plugging it in then I won't need to worry

And very true about the warranty, thank you for the tip,

Nah windows will come installed if you buy it through PCS. All you have to do is click update and download until there are no more updates left to install. then install the GPU drivers and you're off the races

Hi Bigfoot, thank you for your help.

Cheers for noticing the WiFi card, I would have never known otherwise.

It's predominantly used for video editing/motion design with after effects and premiere pro, I also do the typical graphic design stuff so photoshop etc, so to answer your question both but predominantly I work with video but on occasion do the odd digital photo editing.

I'd say with the setup STEVEYG recommends (plus change of case and WiFi card) around £200 - £300 is my budget could possibly put another hundred on top of that.

I'll definitely look into HDR capable monitors. And I have also been thinking about buying a calibrator at some point so I'll add that one to the list next paycheck.

And thanks for clearing up my confusion about screen resolution and GPU, the information when I researched into it was quite confusing and mainly aimed at gamers so thank you for clarifying.

EDIT: I have been looking at this Asus monitor - https://uk.store.asus.com/asus-proart-pa24ac-computer-monitor-61-cm-24-wuxga-flat-silver.html

Brilliant! I've knocked the home install off my list, and thankfully I know how to install the GPU driver 😅 I think I was just doubting my technical ability.

I would also look into Benq monitors. The SW240 is a 10 bit display with 99% of Adobe RGB and hardware calibration. The online price from reputable stores is similar to your Asus model. I have just got its bigger brother.

I've just had a look at the BenQ from a website named camera world. I heard good things from both companies and the 24" is the max I can fit on my desk right now (there's a stupidly placed tv near my desk which limits me from getting a bigger monitor).

Thank you for all your help.

Hi Steveyg,

Sorry to bring an old thread back to life but I've been looking at buying the configured desktop you suggested in the next few days but I've just run into some problems when proceeding with my order. It comes up with the following issues:

  • Please note that the radiator from the Corsair Hydro H115i cooler will occupy 2 x 120mm internal fan slots on the roof of your case. Please, therefore, note that it may not be possible to install additional case fans and we recommend that you check the fan capacity of your chosen case (by clicking on the case image above) before proceeding.

  • You have selected an 850W power supply, but based on our calculations you actually only need a 450W power supply. We have calculated your specification to require around 421W power including a 20% allowance. Although it is not a mandatory requirement to select a lower wattage power supply, doing so will save you money and the last thing we'd like to do is overcharge you! I know you mentioned the high-watt power supply will save me in the future so not sure if this is still a problem.

  • We note that you have selected an M.2/PCI-E SSD drive and a mechanical hard drive under the primary hard disk drive option. Please confirm whether you would like your operating system (OS) to be installed on the SSD drive or on the mechanical hard drive. Wasn't sure to go for HDD OR SSD?

  • It also notes that preordering certain components may take longer so I hope it won't be that long of a wait.
Here is the slightly updated setup:

Please, therefore, note that it may not be possible to install additional case fans and we recommend that you check the fan capacity of your chosen case (by clicking on the case image above) before proceeding. Yeah this is fine, radiator will be mounted to the roof of your case which is the best place for it in my opinion

Yeah reason for the 850W RMx is because it's a brilliant PSU, it will outlast all the components in that build and it'll power anything you throw at for 5-10 years. It's that size because the deal PCS offer on the 850W RMx is really good so you don't save much by dropping to the 750W and the extra head room will allow it to run quieter and cooler. Plus you can pretty much upgrade what you like and add what you like without having to worry about power consumption.

OS goes on the fastest possible drive which is the 500Gb Samsung 980 Pro M2 SSD. This is pretty much only for your OS and maybe one or two key programs. Don't let this drive get more than 75% full as it will start to run slower but if kept under 75% your OS will be lightening quick!

  • It also notes that preordering certain components may take longer so I hope it won't be that long of a wait. Yeah the wait and lead times are just something everyone has to deal with at the minute unfortunately. Can't say how long it'll be mate sorry

Started working through this and then saw the green text. Stevey has as always done a really good job of answering your questions.
With regards to the components, the 5900x CPU and 3000-series GPUs are in high demand. Recent builds including these components have been built in around 20 working days, but this is dependent on fluctuating stock so we can’t guarantee how long a build will take, only tell you how long similar builds have taken recently.

Looks like a fantastic system though, and it’ll be well worth the wait! 🙂

Thank you for such a quick reply.

Well, that answers all my questions.

I was really confused about the cooler problem as I thought that it meant I needed the 2x 120mm extra fan case(rear/roof) instead of the 1x 120mm extra case (rear/roof).

Cheers for the tip about the OS I'll keep it in mind make sure it's at 75%.

Thanks for all your help, can't wait till it comes. (y)

Yes agreed, Steveyg has been incredibly helpful throughout this entire thread and I'm sure I'd be lost without him. (y)

Yeah, I was aware that there's been a bunch of issues about the stock of Ryzen 9's and Nvidia's new GPU's, but I'm alright with waiting as I know people are going through the same wait as I am.

I was going to ask/email to see whether this delivery being postponed affects the returns policy (14 days).

I'm sure it will be, can't wait to get ahold of it :)
