Have a read of this sticky, and come back with the answers to the questions raised (around usage, monitor, budget, etc.), and I'm sure one of the helpers will show you the error of your ways ;)

If you're after a good VR experience alongside 4k gaming, then I think you'd have to go down the Nvidia GPU route, and that will really eat into your budget (e.g. the 4080 Super is £930 on its own).

You've also selected a 3 generation old CPU, dead-end platform, budget case, too low a PSU, single-slot RAM, and a motherboard intended for an office/b budget PC.

You can go to a newer, more efficient platform with a AMD CPU that will perform as well as the 12700 in both gaming and compiling...but at about half the power usage.

If we ignore the VR/4K gaming question for now and stick with your original AMD GPU choice, then something like this may be a better option, and allow you to slot in a beefier GPU down the line...

Case
FRACTAL FOCUS 2 ARGB GAMING CASE (BLACK) - better case, and no need for more fans
Processor (CPU)
AMD Ryzen 7 7700 Eight Core CPU (3.8GHz-5.3GHz/40MB CACHE/AM5) - very efficient CPU, equal performance to the 12700 and
Motherboard
ASUS® TUF GAMING B650-PLUS WIFI (AM5, DDR5, PCIe 4.0, Wi-Fi 6)
Memory (RAM)
32GB Corsair VENGEANCE DDR5 6000MHz (2 x 16GB) - better performance than a single stick
Graphics Card
16GB AMD RADEON™ RX 7900 GRE - HDMI, DP - DX® 12 - this over the 7800XT as it's slightly faster, and slightly cheaper
1st M.2 SSD Drive
512GB SOLIDIGM P44 PRO GEN 4 M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD (up to 7000MB/sR, 4700MB/sW) - much faster boot drive, smaller to ensure you keep it free from bloat (so just the OS and apps)
1st M.2 SSD Drive
2TB SOLIDIGM P41+ GEN 4 M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD (up to 4125MB/sR, 3325MB/sW)
Power Supply
CORSAIR 850W RMx SERIES™ MODULAR 80 PLUS® GOLD, ULTRA QUIET - 650W is too low for this level of build (the configurator shows a basic calculation of max power required, but doesn't take account that the PSU runs most efficiently in the 40-60% range)
Power Cable
1 x 1.5 Metre UK Power Cable (Kettle Lead, 1.0mm Core)
Processor Cooling
DeepCool AK620 ZERO DARK High-Performance Dual Tower CPU Cooler
Thermal Paste
STANDARD THERMAL PASTE FOR SUFFICIENT COOLING
Sound Card

Unfortunately an ideal 4k/VR system is around £2400 at the moment. You can shave costs off here and there but you're still easily over £2k with zero bells and whistles.

For 4k gaming with VR in mind the minimum gpu I would opt for would be the 4070 Ti (Super). It does a good job with 4k and has all the tech to boost the frames, it will handle VR very well also.

The 4080 Super is no doubt the ideal offering with value being sensible. You're looking at increased PSU to offer any sort of headroom though so it's just just the GPU bump you need to consider.

Hey, thanks for the suggestions! I think my original build was sitting at just under 1500, and I just meant I'll be installing my own Windows OS

Yea I don't think I need the 4k gaming experience as i don't play that many 4K capable games (The monitor was a freebee from work)

I'm just a little confused surrounding the limitation to VR games? Is the recommended GPU just not good enough to run them?
