My Dad is retired and loves playing FSX and First Person Shooters. His current machines was bought by my brother and I as a 70th birthday present but he wants to upgrade and we have £1000 saved between us. What do you think of the spec below?

Thanks in advance,
Dan.

Firstly there's no point in over clocking your cpu as that drains your cpus lifespan. I also selected one of the best cases in the market. No point in the kingston ram as you will only notice a difference if its over clocked. The gpu i chose is also very good. I chose a 750w just to be futureproof. The triple cooper is enough if your not over clocking. I chose a better led monitor. And dont forget the year collect and return for a fiver. Are you sure you dont need windows ?

Hello ggx32, the spec itself is fine, thats a very powerful GPU which will handle all current FPS games on high/ultra and that particular i5 currently out-performs the entire AMD range, however if you get the Titan CPU cooler you cant have the huge side fan on the T900 case (the titan is so big it would grind against the fan), thus i recomend either the ECO liquid cooler (this is a self maintance cooler so it dosent have to be re filled etc), or the tripple heatpipe.

PS: i personally dont recomend overclocking, i seriously doubt your dad would appreciate instabilty issues whilst on his flight sims etc, the stock i5 is fine.

Thanks for the info and apologies for the harsh comment.

Thanks Shocksalot,

Thats exactly the type of info I was after.

Apologies to angdulaid for beign a bit harsh but crikey, i have overclocked quite a few processors, (All core-duo's) with no probelms what so ever, my current system is a 2.4 overlocked to over 3 and its stable and no signs of "wearing out". That said operhspas a tad harsh.

I am a bit surprised on the comments about not overclocking the i5, everythign I have read so far on this processor says that this is one of the major reasons to choose it. Plus both here and other places like Overclockers have packages available (and chargable) to squeeze a good 20% plus out of the chip producing very stable results...

So no one else is overclocking there i5?

regards,

I think it's more the fact that for the intended usage that overclocking isn't really required, thus people suggested not bothering with it.
If you want to overclock though that's fine - especially since you have experience in doing so.

I stand corrected, after talking to technical support here at PCSpecialist they do in fact confirm the the chip's life will be shortened by the level of overclockign they perform, the example given was rather than lasting 15 years, it may only last 13. I can live with that i think....

I guess my question is why not to overclock? Obviously it needs to be stable but from reading a fair bit on i5, plus comments from technical support here and at overclockers anything under 4.4 is a given, rock solid and nothig to worry about....

I accept that as far as I know it shouldn't matter to much to the games, I will give it a try with it on and off and let you know the results....
