Future Proof PC?

Hi,
I have had my existing PC for 9 and 1/2 years, which has been upgraded during its life with extra RAM, new DVD Re-writers, Hard-drives, soundcards, usb keyboards, operating systems, but the motherboard, CPU (PentiumIII 1Ghz) and Power units are original.
So it is about time I got a new one, which again I will look to (over time) uplift the graphics cards(maybe have 2), add a blue-ray re-writer, add 2 or 3 hard drives but leave the power, motherboard, CPU the same throughout the life of the PC.

So the question is -
1. will the power unit support additional of 2 extra harddrives, Blu-ray, maybe 2 PCI Cards plus a second graphic card.
2. is it worth getting the 6Gb or start with 4Gb (what's my bang for my buck on the difference).
3. Will the PC be 'silent' with the CoolerMaster Case.
4. (sounds a stupid question, but....) Will a USB keyboard and mouse connect to this ?

Any suggestions of changes ?

Thanks for your time.

Shaun.

I've got a similar spec being built but with 4gb and a gtx470 instead, can always add more ram later. If you want to add a 2nd or more powerful gpu later you'll need a more powerful psu, 1000w to sli 2 gtx470, don't know about the ati cards but do know they use less power so might be alright with 850? Someone else will be able 2 advise better than I but hope that helps to start.

It won't be for high end gaming (never seen anything that can really future proof that) - but will be used for picture editing, video editing, drawing packages, web design, and the standard basics (web, docs, spreadsheets, mail, music) all at the same time (well what it can handle).

I'd strongly suggest a set of 6GB (tri-ddr3) as a set of 3 modules will perform much better due to the motherboard using modules in triplets, preferably from the same pack, i.e. a pack of 3 Kingston 1600MHZ would be nice :)

Hey Shaqui,

1) Yes, the Corsair TX650 will be adequate should you wish to add extra HDDs, DVD Drives, RAM etc in the future.
2) Agree with Sleinous, go for 6GB RAM so its running in tri-channel.
3) No PC we sell is silent, there are ways to keep noise levels down by choosing good CPU cooler & PSU (which you have done). The PC will be quiet but will not be silent.
4) Yes, USB keyboard & mouse will connect fine - don't worry!

Finally, if the PC is going to be used for photo/video editing and general day to day use then go for an nVidia Graphics Card. Their CUDA Cores boost performance these kind of applications - a GTS450 will be perfect! Also, adding a second Graphics Card in the future will not improve performance for editing - only gamimg.

Yes, SLI only comes in handy for gaming, photoshop and other CUDA enabled software will really profit from the Nvidia GPUs, thus leaving the CPU free to get on with other tasks.

Thanks for advice - taken on board and now ordered ! comparing GTS450 and ATI5770 reviews was interesting - all pushing towards the 5770 - but did find a review where other aspects were (not just gaming) the GTS450 was a good bet - so thanks guys for your advice.

For more quietness use the coolermaster sileo 500. I dont know how everyone seems to miss that point. Its got soundproofing foam thingy!!!

Good point, well worth a shot if you an squeeze it into your budget. Should add around £30 or so.
