General advice for upgrading my AMD cpu to Intel

Hi everyone,

I previously was advised by a gentleman called Oussebon and found his advice to be very useful but chose to ignore it and now slightly wish i had listened....

my setup is :

AMD FX-6350 Six Core CPU
ASUS® M5A97 R2.0 (DDR3, USB3.0, 6Gb/s)
16GB HyperX FURY DUAL-DDR3 1600MHz
4GB EVGA FTW GTX970
240GB KINGSTON UV400 2.5" SSD, SATA 6 Gb
1TB Hitachi 3.5" HDD
CORSAIR H55 HYDRO SERIES HIGH PERF CPU COOLER
ARCTIC MX-4 EXTREME THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY COMPOUND
CORSAIR 550W VS SERIES™ VS-550 POWER SUPPLY
WINDOWS 10 (64-BIT)
ViewSonic VX2370Smh-LED - 23" IPS LED Monitor

The advice im looking for is if i would be able to upgrade this to an Intel CPU if i changed the MOBO and what MOBO should i go for?

If we keep in mind that im on a 'tight' budget for arguements sake,

Could Oussebon or someone likeminded please advice the best course of action i could take in regards to this matter please?

Choice depends on your budget but ideally an i5 with whichever motherboard that can fit your budget. You may be better off checking sellers that sell boundless of CPUs + motherboards. It is not encouraged in here to give specific advice on self builds which is almost the likely scenario here due to a change of motherboard.

I think you may have also been apart of advising me at the time to go with Oussebons suggestion and i didnt listen to you either at the time!

The only thing I'd add to the above is to ask whether you really need to upgrade yet. While the FX 6350 is not as good as an i5 6600 or something similar for gaming, it's not like it won't run most games.

For instance, Fallout 4 seems to benefit more than most games from CPU performance: http://www.techspot.com/review/1089-fallout-4-benchmarks/page5.html
But even then your CPU would average out almost 60fps on ultra in that benchmark. You could also fine tune settings that are particularly demanding on the CPU. I use FO4 as an example, but that applies to many games. It's often possible to tweak settings without an appreciable loss in fidelity.

And of course there are games like The Division http://www.techspot.com/review/1148-tom-clancys-the-division-benchmarks/page5.html which are pretty brutal on the GPU but don't really care if you have an FX 6350 or an i7 6700k.

If its performance is okay - not great, but not actually a problem - I'd suggest just keeping it for the time being. If you can live with it for right now, you might as well save the money up and buy something when Zen or Kaby Lake or even Canon Lake are released. That way you'll be getting more milage out of the money you've already spent, and getting a proportionately bigger upgrade when you do come to shell out for more stuff.

Once again though, thank you very much for the advice and i think this time i will listen to you!

I would obviously like the upgrade to an i5 or an i7, My rig is absolutely great for what i currently want it for. Its actually a bit a of a mini beast when it comes to games its great!

Looking into the future though i may well want to host some live streams and graphic creation which, especially for the live streaming, this rig is just not up to par. Its a bit of a minor gripe to be honest but i do wish i had listen to you before when you suggested the i5 rig!
