3900+ needs the X570 board IMO. Even the X470 with it's better VRMs (compared to the B450) isn't at a high enough level where I would be personally happy.

The 3900 running at full chat will put out more heat than a 3800X at full chat and need even better cooling, my guess is this makes it a non starter at any rate.

IMO there's nowhere to save money on this build without compromising its integrity. Lowering the CPU to the 3600 would be an option though as I would be happy using the stock cooler with that chip, even for most professional applications.

The X570 consideration would be based on future state. It's a luxury right now, no doubt, but down the line it opens up the door to potential upgrades that the B450 may limit.

HI, sorry coming back to this! I ordered it but made a couple of tweaks since. It is still in pre production so changeable (I think!) and I am having a couple of panics that it is correctly balanced. I managed to increase the budget so it's turning into a bit of a beast but my son wants to get into video editing so I don't mind a bit of overkill to help 'future proof' it a bit and I am going to enjoy lots of photo editing on it.

With the 3900x you'd have to up the PSU to the 650TXm series, up the thermal paste, and personally I'd up the cooler to the H100i.

It’s not about overclocking, it’s a completely different level of processor and you have to keep it cool to run at optimal frequencies, otherwise it will click down to lower temps.

Oh, sorry, if you're getting the H100i then you don't need the thermal paste, it comes pre applied with really high quality paste.

The i plugs into the motherboard via USB so you can monitor pumps, fans and temperatures with software (which is invaluable) and set alarms. The H100x doesn't have this, so if the pump fails, you wouldn't know until the PC overheats and you risk damaging the CPU or motherboard.

Upping to the 3900x is a major step up in overall performance and lifetime of the machine... the 3900x is just an absolute beast of a CPU and you're on a very strong platform for upgrading also. That will last a very long time, it's well worth the extra inital outlay long term.

Not sure if I mentioned that the PC case will be in a relatively enclosed space so your advice is probably sensible. Looks like I will have to get up to speed with all this hardware management via software/BIOS etc, not an area I have looked at before and was not needed on my older systems (and as I am 45 I have had a few!)

Just need to tart up my old 4460s system now and try and sell it for a bit of cash!

Decent space at the front and some space at the back will see it fine. I have 5/6" behind my PC and it's fine even at full chat gaming in VR.

That system will easily last 10 years and be relevant. You will likely upgrade the GPU over the course but there's no reason that a 4.6GHz 12c/24t chip isn't going to last the distance.

For professional applications (editing etc), you'll likely add another 16GB of RAM over the course. That's it though IMO.
