GTA V Vanilla Keeps Crashing - Even after reinstall? GPU Problems?

Hi guys,

Apologies if this should be in the PC Gaming section - but this very much seems to be a technical issue to me.

Bought a PC from here, and it arrived a month ago. Really loving it, but I seem to be having an issue with GTA V.

At first, I downloaded the game, and before really playing it I downloaded a few mods to boost the graphics and add some real life cars. I found the game to run fine, though it always crashed after a certain amount of time. I assumed this was simply due to the mods I'd installed as I noticed that every time the game crashed, one of the mods log file had a size of 900kb, or there about, every single time, and simply deleting the log file would cause the game to run absolutely fine without any hiccups, until of course the size of the log file reached 900kb again. I have spent the last month on forums trying to figure it out, but nobody has been able to help me as of yet. One day I loaded up the game to find all the graphics settings had been reduced to the absolute minimum, and the game was running at a very low fps with huge framerate drops quite often. The graphics mod was not working at all, despite the fact that their logo was still appearing on the menu screen, and I had not interfered with any of the files for the mod.

I then returned the graphics settings to what I had them at previously. The menu indicated that with these settings, I was using about 2GB of VRAM. The game still ran terribly, at around 30fps with huge framerate spikes every few seconds, when previously it was running at 60fps as smooth as anything, with a more GPU intensive mod on top of that. It also said on the Xbox Gamebar that GPU usage was around 75-85%, but VRAM usage was at 99-100%. I have a 6GB RTX 2060, with all the latest drivers...

Naturally, my next step was to completely remove GTA from my computer, delete all mod files, program files, etc. I have just started it up for the first time after redownloading, and my graphics settings have remained, meaning I must've missed some files somewhere (I have no idea where, I even deleted all Rockstar games folders and files, and on top of that I installed it to my second m.2 drive, rather than the boot drive I originally had it installed on). But anyway, this time I went straight into GTA Online, something that I hadn't been able to do previously due to mods being installed. I created my character, and within about 30 seconds of spawning into the world, another crash. I also noticed that the game was running at about 30fps, again with VRAM usage at 100% despite the GTA menu saying it was using about 2GB of the available 6. I don't know if this is worth noting, but I run everything at 1440p, idk if the GTA menu takes this into account when estimating how much of the GPU it would use.

I have considered that this could be an issue with my graphics card, however it runs Warzone absolutely fine on pretty high settings, and never crashes or gives me any kind of issue. One thing that I did notice that was very strange to me (a noob with very limited PC knowledge) is that when I first played Valorant, I noticed that my GPU and VRAM usage was solidly at 100%, and my computer (almost definitely the GPU) started making a horrible crunching/whirring sound, it almost sounded like a circular saw cutting through metal. I also noticed the framerate was jumping from 100-140fps with huge drops every few seconds, and tried to figure out what could be causing this in the settings. All it turned out to be was that the framerate was set to unlimited, and since I have a 60hz monitor, I set the limiter to 60, and obviously it ran like an absolute dream and the GPU went from near dying to doing very little. Surely if it had continued like this and I hadn't realised, it would have caused damage to the graphics card? Because it certainly sounded like it was. But my understanding was that GPU's have failsafes in place that would prevent this kind of damage. My worry is it certainly didn't seem as if my GPU has this failsafe. I also note that the VRAM usage never seems to drop below 25%, even when idle. That's probably normal but I don't know.

My Specs:
AMD Ryzen 7 5800X 8 Core
Corsair Vengeance 2x16GB
Zotac Gaming RTX 2060

I think that's all you should need? Let me know if you need anything else.

Any help is hugely appreciated guys, thanks in advance.

The BSOD Doctor
TBH given all the modding you've done and changes you've made I would do a clean reinstall of Windows from bootable media, deleting all UEFI partitions and allowing Windows Update to find all drivers.

You need to start at a base that you know is stable and work up from there. Trying to troubleshoot your existing system is likely to be a bit of a Gordian Knot...
