Help buying a new gaming pc.

Hello! I've had my current pc for around 6 years or so now and I'm looking to upgrade! My budget is around £1500 or so and I'm currently looking to upgrade monitors to 1440p. I'm not too clued up on pc components so any help would be useful! Here's what I came up with.

A 1440p gaming PC for something in the region of £1500 is definitely possible, even though a couple of corners have to be cut. The big things are the CPU and the GPU. For gaming, 8 cores is unnecessary, but current-generation is important, so I'm recommending the 5600X. And for 1440p, unless you want massive framerates at the highest settings or are getting an ultrawide, a 3060 Ti is a cheaper and completely reasonable alternative to the 3070.

I've changed your motherboard again to the current generation, upgraded the Intel SSD to a superior Samsung one, given you a higher-rated power supply (giving better lifespan and more upgradability), upgraded your WiFi card and removed Bullguard, which isn't a useful product.

This build comes to £25 more than your original. It is probably going to be better now, and in the long term will be much more upgradable.

If your old computer is getting retired, you could transfer your Windows licence across, saving around £90. If you do this or can find a bit more money in the budget, I'd recommend getting a second M.2 SSD for games (the 1TB PCS own-brand one is ideal).

Thanks you very much for the reply, really informative!

Another question I would ask is: What games are you likely to be playing? I ask as, whilst most games these days are still GPU heavy, some are coming through which need more, especailly with Ray Tracing being used....The Medium (just released), as an example, needs an R7 CPU for high levels of Ray Tracing.
I play all sorts of different games, from Dead by Daylight and Overwatch to WoW and Horizon Zero Dawn.

Re your old computer, if you transfer the W10 you can still use it with a Linux distro, they are mostly free.

Would not be able to run all software but a lot and for general use would be fine.

Is RGB important? If not, stick with that case and get some extra black fans, if it is... i’d suggest the 5000X RGB

I've just done a new build based on @sck451 pretty awesome one with a couple changes.

The B550 TUF will be fine for the 5600X. It's still got 2 PICe 4.0 M.2 drives, if you want to add an extra M.2 SSD for games. I've also uprated the CPU cooler to the Cooler Master Master Liquid 240 which given the budget I feel is a worthy spend to keep CPU temps down, plus it adds 2 case fans. Overall lowers the spend a little bit (about £20).

I haven't added a 2nd M.2 for games as SCK recommended but I'd agree with him and say that's a good optional upgrade if the budget permits

I don't think that's correct about the M.2 drives. On B550, there's only one PCIe gen 4.0 M.2 slot and one gen 3.0. On X570, there's two gen 4.0 M.2 slots. Moreover, all the other PCIe slots on X570 are gen 4, whereas on the B550 there is one gen 4 and the rest are gen 3. (See the B550 Plus technical specifications and the X570 Plus technical specifications to see this in more detail than you could ever wish.)

This might not be the biggest thing in the world, but who knows where computer components will go over the next ten years. The motherboard is much harder to replace than it is to add an AIO cooler in the future; I'd personally put the money there. But the B550 would, of course, be entirely adequate for the present purposes.

It’s not a dramatic difference for right now, as the tech is still new, but in the future... it could be a future bottleneck
Yeah. Seeing how quickly Storage tech with SSD’s has evolved, who knows where we’ll be in 5 or 10 years time

The best specs ive seen on here come from discussion !!!!
Exactly, you can’t learn without mistakes, and now I know!
