Hello,

As of recent I have decided to finally get a new laptop as some new games like Xcom 2 run awfully.

My current stats:
Intel i5 Duel core 3210m 2.5Gz, 3.2Gz turbo.
Nvidia Geforce 630m 2GB
6GB RAM

The one I'm looking to buy is the 15.6" Optimus VIII Laptop for £983:
Intel i7 Quad core 7700HQ 2.8Gz, 3.8Gz turbo.
Nvidia Geforce GTX 1050TI 4GB
16GB RAM

I know prepared to my current build it is much better, however I feel the GPU maybe the bottleneck, as the two other specs are quite good, or am I wrong? According to 'Game debate' the next card up: 6GB 1060 GPU isn't much of a significant upgrade, considering I will have to pay £1,165.

I am hoping this new laptop will allow me to not worry for many years about playing the newest games, do you think it is sustainable?

Game debate is often garbage. I've heard one hardware reviewer say you're better off using a Lorem Ipsum generator.

A GTX 1060 is very significantly more powerful than a GTX 1050 ti. For instance:

Going from a GTX 1050 ti to a GTX 1060 might actually be a bigger performance jump than any between any other two neighbours in the series (much better than GTX 1050 to 1050 ti, and very slightly bigger even than going from a 1060 to a 1070).

You can see it's much more likely to be able to run games at high settings.

The GTX 1050 it is a truly massive upgrade over your Geforce 630, and should be capable of playing many modern games somewhere around high settings. But the 1060 is a lot more powerful and if you have the budget it is worth giving serious thought to.

Note that 8gb RAM will be more than sufficient for your needs, and you can always add more in the future (unlike the GPU, which you'e stuck with for all the laptop's life). So if it's a choice between 16gb RAM and a better GPU, go for the GPU.

The link comparing the two cards certainly shows the 1060 being much better.

I'm happy that the CPU is good, and now inclined to get the 1060 instead of the additional RAM, however, I'm worried about 8GB not being sustainable. With newer games seem to be demanding more ram. True I can add more, but what makes you think 8GB is enough?

Ultimately this is a lot of money, so whatever I do buy, I don't want to feel like it's not as powerful/ as good as it should be, for a long time. :sweatdrop:

The articles show that very few games will even get close to pushing the system such that 8gb isn't more than enough - and even where you deliberately leave open 60 browser tabs so that your 8gb isn't enough it still doesn't make much of a difference to performance (a frame per second here and there).

A GTX 1060 is far more important to gaming performance than 8gb more RAM.

By all means buy 16gb RAM if you have the money (it's not wasteful to buy 16gb) - but if you don't have the money to get it as well as a GTX 1060, or if you do have the money but would rather spend the cash on something else, 8gb RAM is absolutely fine for now and you can always add more in the future.

Future games will tax the GPU far more and far sooner than the RAM. Having 16gb RAM with a GTX 1050 ti is unlikely to matter much for gaming because you'll have had to tone down settings due to the GPU being a bottleneck anyway such that the additional RAM wouldn't be likely to really enhance your experience.

Hello,

I think i will now be getting:
The 15.6" Proteus V Laptop for £1,169:
Intel i7 Quad core 7700HQ 2.8Gz, 3.8Gz turbo.
Nvidia Geforce GTX 1060 6GB
16GB RAM (2x8GB)

My final two concerns:

The RAM is 'only' 2133Mhz DDR4 compared to other 2400Mhz DDR4 on different laptops. I'm thinking the difference is near unnoticeable, but just want to be sure!

And finally, is it worth spending the extra money on the EK-TIM ECTOTHERM paste? Is is superior in the sense that it will increase life and performance in the future?

Pretty much.

The better thermal paste may help lower temps a bit and keep the laptop quieter. Also, keeping components cooler can preserve their lifespan, though I doubt it makes much difference there - it's not like your stuff will melt with the basic paste.
