Is the graphics card in my Vortex IV being used ?

When I run the Windows 7 Experience Index I get mid-to-high 7's for all benchmarks, but for graphics I get 5.9. It's been suggested to me that I shouldn't worry, it's just "using the onboard graphics for its tests". But recently I was using Adobe Lightroom 6 and had serious performance issues. People suggested I turn off the hardware acceleration, but by then I'd already given up on it and uninstalled from this laptop. But that also does hint that perhaps it was an onboard graphics rather than separate graphics card related thing. Possibly.

So how can I be sure my GeForce GTX 870M is even being used, and if required, how can I disable the internal Intel HD 4600 graphics. Or do I not want to do that.

I'm not sure if this helps but in tech support there's a sticky on how to enable the nvidia gpu on games

Thanks kt1, I was about to reply that I don't do gaming so it won't be relevant, but I took a look and it's highly relevant. I got to specify the default graphics and force some that weren't using it over to be using it. I just re-run the WEI test and graphics still only gets a 5.9, but now I believe that if I knew which program to add then I'd be able to force that through the GTX too. I know the WEI is irrelevant, but now I at least know more about how to take control of how the graphics are used :)
